1.5 to a 1.6 swap
hi there, im usually a domestic guy but i have this honda civic im using as a daily driver. its a 95 4 door with a 1.5 sohc non vtec. it is in need of an engine and transmission as the old one has 260,000 on it and needs to be replaced. i am in no way trying to make this a race car i just want to fix it cheap and reliably. i have come across a 1.6 sohc vtec engine and this route just so happens to be my cheapest route. i was wondering if the engine will bolt right in, if the wiring harness is different from a nonvtec. im guessing i will need to get a whole computer and wiring harness with the engine. the 1.6 is out of a 94 so its still obd1. i can get the wiring harness and computer with the engine if i need to i just wanted to make sure. i also came across a nonvtec 1.6 for a little more expensive. any help is greatly appreciated thanks in advance!

the 1.6 non vtec engine is an obd2 engine. the OBD1 1.6 vtec must be a d16z6. that is one of the simplest swaps known. there is a sticky at the top of this forum with swap guides and FAQs. that will help you through this easy swap.
EDIT: where are you located?

thanks for the replys, i got the motor and its a d16y8. which is a little different than what dave mentioned, it seems this motor is from a 96 and newer.

you will need to reuse the distributor and alternator from the D15B7 you're hauling out. If the D16Y8 you got came from an automatic you will need to get one from either a manual Y8 or a D16Z6, the D15B7 intake can be used but its more restrictive. You can use the D16Y8 transmission provided its a manual, if its an automatic you'll need to find one from a '92 - '95 civic DX/LX/EX. ECU will need to come from a '92 - '95 Civic EX/Si (ECU is a P28). If using a D16Y8 intake manifold you will need to add an IAT sensor in the intake tube. If using a D16Z6 manifold its already in the manifold. You will need to run 2 wires, plus a ground for vtec.

thats awesome thanks a bunch, yea the car is a manual and the 16 motor and trans is manual as well, so the only thing i should have to worry about is the ecu, and im getting an ecu that went with the motor so hopefully it all works out. if i use the 1.5 intake will i have to add any iat or map sensors or anything in that nature that the new ecu might need?

Don't use the D16Y8 ECU. Use a P28 ECU from a '92 - '95 civic EX/Si. OBD2 D16Y8 ECU wont physically plug into the OBD1 '92 - '95 civic harness first off. You can get an adapter harness, but it will be looking for a seconadary O2 sensor/CKF sensor and A sensor on the gas tank related to emissions whose name escapes me at the moment. All of which are not present on the '92 - '95 civic.

Nope, the only reason you need to add an IAT sensor on the D16Y8 is because OBD1 cars ('92 - '95 civics) have the IAT in the manifold, OBD2 cars ('96 - '00 civic) have the IAT in the intake pipe/ducting from the airbox to the manifold.

You welcome. Good luck with your swap

Re: 1.5 to a 1.6 swap
I will be attempting a D15B7 to D16Z6 swap in the near future and need some help similar to the OP but with an added twist...
I have two 95 civics; a LX with the D15B7 (non-VTEC) and 5 speed manual transmission and a EX with the D16Z6 VTEC and 4 speed automatic.
I want to remove the D15 motor from the LX and put the D16 in its place. What I'll have (hopefully) when it's all said and done is an LX civic with the D16 and 5 speed manual.
I've been able to figure out from this forum and other sources that I will need to use the P28 ECU out of the EX with the R17 and R18 resistors jumped to make it play nice with the manual transmission.
My question is what else should I plan on having to do to make this thing work correctly the first time?
Are all the harnesses and plugs I will need to make the D16 work in the LX already present or do I need to come up with some other stuff for this to work?
Does the transmission from the LX bolt up to the EX motor? I know I will need to remove the torque converter and so forth but will it actually go together without having to "adapt" some stuff?
Are the fuel pumps the same in each car or do I need to move them around as well? What about engine and transmission mounts?
I've been keeping both these cars alive for the 10 years I've had them but their both reaching the end of their useful lives for a few different reasons. I'm hoping I can make one good car out of the two of them.
Any help is appreciated.
