I would imagine that if the flow charecteristics arent as good then that could be changed if you were really interested. However, the y8 head has a more efficiently designed combustion chamber as well as better compression, last time I checked, which is something that you cant change. Not easily atleast.

The quench on the Y8 is much better, but I believe it is the curvature of the port dividers that is the problem.

Re: Y8 Oil starvation ? (RyanCivic2000)
well I am going to use the y8 head for several reasons.
1. (and the most important) I already have one
2. the quench area help keep down detonation. (I would rather have my engine running than blown)
3. there will always be someone faster out there, and where I do agree that a z6 head is better in some aspects, I would love to see what the number differences are for a LOW horsepower motor. I don't plan on making more than 250-275 tops. I know some people who have made tremendous power with the SOHC saw some significant power increases with the z6 head (Zexman comes to mind) I don't feel that i am suffering with my head choice.
the block choice is what this post is about. and I plan on using the z6 block b/c of it, better safe than sorry. but a SOHC is cheap enough to throw another block in despite which one you use. (I now have 4 motors in various stages of disassemblement)
I enjoy reading the good commentary and check this post often.

If you have a link to more detailed info about the port dividers I would appreciate it. I've been wanting to have that info for a while and have been too busy to do an extensive search.

Re: [FAQ] Y8 Oil starvation ?
Bump. My d16y8 burns a hell of a lot of oil, more than a quart every 1k miles. Compression is about 10 lbs higher in cylinder #4 than the other three, which are almost identical. Is it logical to conclude that either the rings or valve seals at this cylinder allow oil to enter the combustion chamber and burn, producing carbon deposits and the slightly higher comp. ratio? Also, the engine burned zero oil when I bought it with 80k, and after using Mobil 1 for a few changes it all of the sudden drank enough oil two weeks into the change that it didn't register on the dip stick and since that point there has been a low pitched tapping/rattling noise from the bottom end?
Also, to add to the much heated debate, The one time my oil level was low enough to do so, my oil light only came on when making a hard turn one way or the other. I honestly can't remember which way it was, I want to say left turns, but not 100% sure, but I do remember that it was only in one direction. No, I don't plan on re-enacting to see which side it was but the point is, with low enough oil level, one side of the engine is very starved of oil during turns, while the other is fine, or at least not bad enough to have the light come on for a couple seconds.
