Default Maint' Req'

My 2001 civic ex flashes the Maint. Required light about 5 times when i start it. How can i check what the problem is? Also, I could hear Vtec hit for about the first ten minutes of the car running then i dont hear it anymore. could these two be related?

The light is just a reminder that it's almos time to have your next schedualed maintenence , next it will flash 10 times then if you go over 10k miles since the last time the maint req light was reset it will stay on constantly but it doesn't mean anything, you can reset it turning the key to on then holding down the button on the dash and it'll go away . As for the vtec problem, I'll let someone else take that since I have no idea

No, they're not related. I doubt anything's wrong.

Are you sure your engines not just running at a slightly higher rpm while the engines cold?
My vic idles at around 1500rpm while the engine is cold, which drops to 800rpm when its warmed up, I suspect thats what your hearing.
