My 2004 accord v4 is cranking but not starting. As I crank it it's making more of a putting sound as if it trying to start. Any idea on what this might be?

Well as you may know, internal combustion gasoline engines need fuel, air, compression and spark to start. Your car may not be starting for to any of these reasons. The fact that you are hearing a "putting" sound is odd but could mean loss of compression (possibly a loose spark plug) or a timing failure may have your engine turning over with the valvetrain and the bottom end our of time. It's hard to say what the cause of your no start is without further tests but here is one:

-This is a first step test for a no start but still turning over engine that will determine if you have a ignition problem:
Pull off the ignition coil pack's access cover, its the gray/black rectangular cover ontop of the valvecover; right ontop of the engine, its held on with some 10mm cap nuts. Next remove one of the nuts holding on a ignition coil (preferably one that is closest to a ground source), remove the coil, remove the spark plug. Next place the spark plug in the removed coil and with the coil's power supply harness connector still attached, ground the threaded portion of the plug to bare metal and have a friend turn the key and attempt to start. Look at the spark plug to see if there is spark.

I was able to crank the car. But now it seems to run hot and it has a continuous idle.
