How do the guys who build hot rods pass smog? I'm pretty sure a 32 ford coupe never had any emissions equipment I thought you could just pay a fee and you would be exempt from emissions. I'm glad we don't have them.

I'm willing to bet an EF with a swapped motor gets 3x the mpg as a new Hummer has 1/2 the pollution. Now how does that work?

older than a certain year=exempt, pretty much anywhere

here it is now older than 96=exempt. illinois isnt too harsh though, i passed with no cat (perfect/lean idle street tune though, and idle test only)

Vega: redo your timing belt, something is off. I had the same problem and it was off a tooth. I would buy a new cat since it was running so rich. gas will kill the cat quick. Also, the o2 sensor will be shot as well. I think after you do all that, you should be fine. I pretty much had the same problem as you. What kind of air filter are you running?

I bet a lot of it points to a cat thats a bit tired, however, i have a feeling even with a new cat it still wouldnt pass. Timing at 9 degrees? What do u mean thats as close as u could get it? 16 +-2 is the spec, so you're waaaay off. I bet the car feels a bit slow too..or if u think it feels 'ok', wait till u fix that timing!

Is this a state ref inspection station?</TD></TR></TABLE>

No my regular registration. I didn't take it to the ref yet because I don't have the p30 and I didn't want to waste their time.
I took it to a regualr tech to check things out for the most part.
I didn't kow it was going to be that bad.
Well when we were setting the time adjusting the distributor from the reading on the Snap on Timing light the closest we could get it was @ 9 degrees. (I had the Master Tech @ my job helping)
He told me something has to wrong of thats the closet we can get it as well. But Adam was tellig me I was supposed ot be grounding the D4 pin which I wasn't doing @ first.

The car actaully does feel slow and vtec is almost not even apparent. there is no slight pull or or different in tone in the motor anymore like it use to be when I first installed it.
My guess is it all started after I removed my dizzy to check on my other car to find out why it was idling bad.

In Cali it's I believe 1974 and older is smog exempt but they were trying to fight that as well.

That's why a lot of people in CA go old hot rod or real old school Japanese, pre 74 you can do pretty much anything, as long as it's not obviously a gross polluter or disgustingly loud.

Man, I did my smog check a few months back on the CRX, stock D16A6 with a NON VTEC ZC Head, DC header, Stock intake, etc. - guy looked over at me and said I didnt pass and I was like WTF are you talking about...?? My gas cap didnt pass pressure test, it was some autozone replacement the previous owner did, I knew it didnt look right.

Popped over to Honda, picked up a new cap and bam, passed flying colors. Now I need to start working on swapping the two engines so I can get the civic smogged while I work on the CRX.

I replaced the water pump i believe and when i put the timing belt back on, i thought i had everything lined up, turns out the cam was off a tooth and i couldn't fully adjust timing again. you need to jump that mark because if you don't, the ecu starts to adjust it while you turn the dist.

If you never messed with the timing belt, its most likely the jumper. That or if the timing gun has an adjustment **** for timing, it could of been that aswell. Set the adjustment **** to zero if it does have it.

I still would replace the cat and other stuff i mensioned. If that doesn't fix the problem, you might have a sticky injector(s).

As a sidenote, who here is ready for tomorrow?

I still have to run to RB to pick up a wheel that was resealed for my CL tonite, wanted to toss some stuff over from the civic onto the crx and clean everything up.

SOOO, if I show up tomorrow and my car is dirty, you'll know I didnt get crapolla done. Good news is I've been daily'ing my CRX this week, and I really missed it, now I really remember why I have it.

However, now with all this economic crunch, I may just focus on working the CRX cause I have enough to work with without having to spend any extra cash - and wait a little longer to get my civic running.

B16 swap guys, what kinda mileage are you getting by the way?

Even if u did the d4 grounding thing it still shouldnt and wouldnt make that much of a difference. To be honest, ive never noticed any kind of difference when i grounded it or not. Heck, when i was at the ref for both my cars the ref didnt even do it. My idle never fluctuated or tried to compensate when checking or adjusting.

The smog law is 1976 (not 1974) or newer require a bi-annual smog check. It used to be the rolling 25 year thing, but right now its fixed.

If you guys want to keep in touch with govermental issues that affect us as car guys in general go log into and sign up with http://www.semasan.com it's the SEMA Action Network...

The SEMA Action Network is a nationwide partnership of car clubs, and individual enthusiasts (like you) who work together to impact legislation that affects car and truck hobbyists of all kinds. By joining the SAN you will receive up-to-date alerts on hobby-related legislation in your state and across the country. Best of all – it’s free.

Also for you guys who want to surf at work but avoid site blockers and stuff - use http://www.vtunnel.com it's awesome and also free. I can view blocked sites while at work or any sites I dont want anyone to see me on.

*Shakes head*

Considering I'm an Ethics & Compliance Manager I have a big problem with this. People use those tunnels to stream audio/video which takes up a lot of network usage and worse; view inappropriate material

Nick?? You're the MAN?!? Say it ain't so... For some reason this is the last place I would expect to see someone in Ethics and Compliance. Does this really affect network useage? This one you're using their servers to surf, not the companys'. We have VOIP here and I would have heard by now if I had ate up company bandwith, it's apparent pretty quick.

I mostly use it to view my personal stuff during lunch - nothing obscene.

Ethics and Complaince - are you in the insurance industry Nick?

I figured, I'm just being a nerd and when I'm at work...I think as such. Yes, now everyone knows my profession.

I would have to double check with my Security Analyst to see if it affects network bandwidth even though it is through the websites servers. I'm not 100% sure.

I actually work in healthcare. #2 line item on the Federal budget is Medicare ($360 billion annually) so you can imagine the amount of fraud & abuse that occurs in the healthcare industry. That's why I have a job...that's why I have job security.
