The problem isn't so much obd2 vs. obd1. It's a problem with hardware.

Ref's typically understand that obd2 versions of motors are nearly identical to obd1 versions (concerning the longblocks), and that it's much more economical to convert your 88 civic to obd1, rather than installing all sorts of obd2 emissions equipment.

The problem arises when you have a PR3 head on there. They know to look for mismatched blocks/heads (which is why LS/VTEC swaps won't pass at the Ref). So, if you go in there saying that you have a JDM GSR block (B18C), they're going to ask why there is a PR3 head on there instead of a P72.

You can pass a JDM ITR shortblock as a GSR shortblock, since all it says is B18C, and has no other way to show that it's a Type-R instead of a GSR.

so a b16b will never fly either right??

I know a b16b heard is basically a ITR head de-storked
but I don't recall what the head stamp on that is

I know you can't de-stroke

I just used that term to try to explain the difference

I could have just said a ported b16a head w/ better cams but choose the later

thats the thing man, vega never asks, he assumes and it ends with a period. im not ragging on him. example "you can destroke and itr head."

vega, you could get bar refffed f or a cheap LS, the bar badge will say " 1.8L" or something like that, yank it out, and put in your itr motor. at that point the emissions guy wont bat an eye and neither will the cops.

I just asked a question. I think everyone knows I don't know a lot about motors. nor do I claim or act like I do. I just ask questions, hopefully getting a answer that better clarifies things for me in the future.

If I make myself look incompetent, so what. Better to not know and ask then to never know anything @ all.

Haha, that's exactly what my BAR sticker says.

Too bad my Dad didn't charge people to take THEIR car to the ref. He got his USDM B18C5 BAR'd with a JDM ITR ECU on accident. Don't ask me how he did...I think the ref just said, "homeboy's 50+ years old...I'll let him slide."

We got taken on the ECU (expletive INLINE4), but now he's got a USDM ECU and all is well.

Not entirely true. I remember a few years ago when i BAR'd my b17, the ref was asking me questions about the difference betwen GSR and B16 heads and how to tell the differences. He told his assistant to take notes, LOL. They learn things new just like us. They dont know everything about every car. Im sure they ALL have gotten smarter in ragrds to hondas though.

BTW, im in the process of BAR'ing an obd2a motor in my hatch. Anyone have a helms for a obd2a civic or teggy? I need to wire up the DLC 16 pin underdash connector.

I should have included this quote in my reply above but i just saw it.

For my B17 bar label, the ref put down "B17A1" and the frickin block number on the label. I technically wouldnt be able to run a different B17 if i wanted to...so gay. Also, on my b16 in my old rex, he put "1995 Del Sol B16" along with its block number too. The generic label as "1.8L" for 1.8 motors was a back in the day thing i think.

Any B16 whether its a b16a or b16b is the same stroke/crank which is a 77mm.

B18A/B and B20s are all 89mm stroke cranks

B18C(C1, C5, etc) are all 87mm stroke cranks.

All of them have 81mm bores, except the b20. What makes the difference on each block, from A or B or C1 or C5, etc, are pretty much the pistons.

Thats some basic information to learn about... I know my engines but i cant tell you the diff between eg6, ej1, eh, etc. LOL.

Of course. I'll leave it all wet in a pile on the floor, bag it up a week later, and send it back if you think that would help.

Wow this place moves quick... I like that front end Street posted, I've actually been very tempted to a set of flares on the civic. I want to run 15x8's with full susp and sticky tires.

Welcome to the club. I'd like to try a staggered set-up with 15x8 225/45/15's up front. Fender flares may be in the cards for me in '08...I need to do some searching on who makes them for ef/ed.

I was considering finding a generic set and working from there. As long as the curvature is the same. Maybe a set meant for a Miata or something.
