Default Worth it to change out valve guides for 500whp

Alright so I am getting everything together for my new build for a the quest of 500whp. For the head its going to be a p&p gsr head with stock gsr cams, supertech valve springs and retainers, ferrea valves, and viton valve stem seals. My question is, is it worth it to replace the valve guides as well w/oem honda bronze guides or would the ones that are already in there be ok? TIA!

depends on the condition, if the clearance is fine and you don't have sealing problems or notice any abnormal wear you should be go to go.

well i have taken the head off but i havent taken the head apart im just buying parts that i would think i need to build it. as soon as my spring, retainers, and valves come i will be taking in to the guy who is doing the work and let him decide if i need them or not. I was just wondering what everyone usually does for a 500+ wheel hp build

They mainly concentrate on the block and mangement. Save the money on the PnP work, especially on a P72 head like the GS-R you're running, it's not necessary. If the guides aren't broke, don't fix it. Stock cams are fine for 500+whp, but if upper end power is what you need, you can get ITR or Skunk2 Pro1's. (but only if absolutely needed)

Look to keep that hole burning in your pocket for the right management, including fuel and injector upgrades, and the tune..

if stock valve guides are good them keep them. You don't need to replace them

sure thing. O and unless your head is already ported, I wouldn't waste the money. The most power increase you will see is like 10-15 whp. Once your making over 400 to the wheel you wont even notice, much less win or lose a race, over 15 whp haha

yea man definately no need to unless you just wanna go all out. I got lucky and bought my car with a portflow pnp'd head already, but my tuner already advised that hes only ever seen a 15whp increase from this on turbo cars. Its really a all-motor thing haha

One thing you need to think about.Ferrea makes their valve stems 1/2 a thousandths smaller then a stock valve stem.So if your valve guides clearance is .002 then you now have .0025 with a ferrea as opposed to a stock valve or other aftermarket valve company who makes their stems stock size.

A looser valve guide will have more defection of the valve at high lift and wear the valve job quicker. It will also pull more oil thru the guide at high vacuum, and transfer less heat from the valve.

If your going to go with a stock guide then I'd say go with a Manley or other aftermarket valve.

just check the clearance between the valve stem and guide to see if there still in speck. If there good to go then they will be just fine

How could something that gives you a 1/2 tousandths more clearence then a brand new stock guide still be within spec on a used head? Please explain this.

ive always been told if you use stainless steel valves you have to use bronze valve guides.

No you do not have to replace them just because you are using SS.
The reasons you replace with bronze are:

Better heat transfer then stock guides.

You can run tighter clearances then stock guides, which allow better valve stability, longer valve job life, heat transfer and oil control.

Bronze has a better lubricity then stock guides-if the valve stem touches the guide then it will ride the wall better/not gall then stock guide material.

Bronze is a more malleable material then stock guide material-If you bend a valve and it deflects the stem it will usually not break the guide top and fall into the engine like a stock guide will.
