will this work for an oil pan fitting ? (pic)
the fitting is a "3/4'' female hose to 1/2'' MIP adapter"
-the fittings i have seen others use (such as dustin on his site) have a cone shaped fitting on the 1/2'' threaded part...I'm pretty sure that helps seal in the AN hose fitting. Would this be a problem ?
also, im not even sure this is the correct threading...i dont know much about pipe threads. It threads into another piece that i know is a 1/2'' NPT, but at the end, it gets tight and stops moving like it is the wrong threading. I dont know, but ive heard NPT threading is supposed to do this.
I couldnt find anything at Home Depot or at hardware stores that looked like what others have used...will this work or should i go look harder

as long as the 1/2" npt will screw in its fine. i got my oil pan fitting from home depot after i lost my earl's weld fitting and everything worked out ok. i didnt weld the oil pan fitting tho; used jb weld instead and no oil leaks yet, altho its only been a couple of days since i installed the turbo. use teflon tape to make it even more snug.

I had a 5/8" barb/pipe fitting. I tapped the pan to 5/8". screwed it in, the JB welded the hell out of it on both sides. One month so far and its perfect.

I had jb weld on my pan and it started to have a slow leak after 6 months. I drained the oil....removed the 16 nuts from the pan and took the pan to a machine shop. It cost me like $30 and i reused the same oil pan gasket. I have had no leaks in several years.

Re: will this work for an oil pan fitting ?
the biggest problem i see with this besides the fact that it might be the wrong thread pitch is that the fitting shown above is brass.
I originally had a brass fitting welded into my pan, and the thing leaked like a son of a bitch. 1/2 quart of oil would be present on the garage floor each morning.
So I ended up having to buy a new pan ($120), and went back to Home Depot and looked a little harder to find a 1/2 PT STEEL fitting.
Brought it to a more reputable shop and had it welded. I haven't had a drop of oil leak since.
You see, not all welders are able to weld brass. I believe it requires a higher temperature, so pan warpage might result, which is why I think mine leaked (pan was warped around the area, and the fitting was slightly oblong so it didn't have a tight seal - even teflon tape wasn't enough)...

Re: will this work for an oil pan fitting ? (degradated)
yeah that was another concern i had. I was told that brass and steel can be "brazed" together, but it takes a more skilled welder to do this, because the two materials have different melting points and it is harder to get them together without frying one...thats just what i heard, but i assumed that since everybody else used brass fittings it would be OK.
I think i will go look for a steel fitting.
anybody know what an earls weld fitting is ?

Re: will this work for an oil pan fitting ? (97CivicFerio)
i went to two home depots today looking for steel fittings....the closest i found was a short "nipple" pipe with 1/2'' threading on it...i thought maybe i could weld that onto the pan, but decided against it.
-anybody have ideas where to look ?
-what about this "earls weld fitting" ?

What you want is Summit Racing Part number EAR-997110. Go to http://www.summitracing.com and enter that part number in the Summit Part Number Search. It is -10AN which is 5/8". There is no male 1/2" steel weld fitting. You'll need a -10AN female fitting to attach to the weld fitting if you do not already have one.

Use one of these:

AN Thread Male Union - AN 815 961510 10
I cut one side of it off, and had someone braze it to my oil pan:
