Default Turbo mounting question.........

I was wondering if it would be ok to mount a turbo at an angle to help the dp clear? This would be on an angle with the ground so the compressor would be above the turbine slighly. (30-40 degree's). Would there be any problems with the oil delivery to the bearings? I would think it would be ok since it is under pressure. How about the return? We are trying to fit a large T3 on my friends Saab and if it was mounted at an angle that would help us out alot!

I hope someone else will back me up here but........
I would think there would be substantial problems with getting proper oil flow to the bearing assembly. Every turbo I have seen (twin BMW's, twin M-Benz's, RX-7, large diesel truck engines, etc.) have all had the turbo shaft at a horizontal position. The engine oil is under pressure but only a small amount of it makes it to the turbo, so proper drainback is very dependent on gravity and minimal restrictions.

My turbo see's 20-35 psi of oil pressure. Thats a bit of oil pressure to be affected by gravitey. I agree with you that I have never seen a turbo mounted with it's shaft not horizontal.

You can clock the turbo anyway you like but just make sure the center section is perpendicular(sp?) with the ground.

yes, otherise you'll have an blown oil seals not too mention oil leaks off of the oil return flange

Ben, do you mean parallel? You are saying that the compressor housing can be rotated around; but the turbo shaft needs to be flat across the horizon, right? By the way, my last order came in. Thanks again, you guys are great. ~Jamie

89civic1.8T, actually I did see a picture last night of a turbo manifold (donno the engine) with the turbo appearing titled off parallel. It was only very slightly though. But then again it could have been the angle of the picture taken. And I could be wrong but isn't 20-35 psi a little too much oil pressure to see at the center section?

Anyone else have any input? I'm trying not to confuse myself more than usual.

Jamie, you just have to have the oil feed port pointing up and the oil drain pointing down. Glad to hear you're happy with your last order.

My turbo was seening 60-70 psi+ before a put a needle valve inline to turn the pressure down to a max of 20-30. I ran a greddy turbo with the stock oil pressure and it was fine for 3 years. What about drag kits/fmax/custom kits? How do they turn there pressure down going to the turbo?

OK I see you were talking about the oil feed port and oil return ports being perpendicular to the ground. (oil feed port pointing up and the oil drain pointing down) I was thinking you ment the turbo shaft orientation instead. My bad.
