Default Turbo Manifold Temps

Hey guys, i have a drag turbo manifold. There is a temp sensor on the 3rd runner. When the motor was being built the tuner told me that i should have the temp sensor there. I also have another one on the downpipe. He told me i should watch the temp on the manifold, shouldnt go past 1500f. Why? Can anyone tell me? I want to be as cautious as possible..
Thanks

Well, it would be way too hot then...kidding.

Normal temps should be:

Cruising - 600-800 F
Highway and WOT - 1200-1400 F (I've hit 1500 F once or twice).

Why? - because you will cause internal engine damage when things get too hot. Metal deforms, expands, weakens or all of the above.

^^^good article.

to the original poster. in case you havent figured it out yet. that temp sensor measures the temperature of the exhaust gases leaving the head (EGT), not the temerature of the manifold itself.

its hard to say that particular EGTs are safe or "normal". it really depends on the setup and could vary. EGT measurement is also determined by the placement of the probe. EGT will be much higher at the manifold than at the downpipe.

the article discusses nicely that higher EGT doesnt always mean a leaner mixture and that EGT shouldnt be the only parameter used for tuning.
