Default turbo d16

do you guys think its worht while to turbo a sohc vtec. Basically im looking for a reliable, fairly quick, daily driven, alternative to swaping a b-series motor. I was thinking about running the greddy turbo. would the cost of everything be cheaper than actually getting a b18c1. Also what kind of times are being ran with this set up in a eg. Basically this would mean i would have o buy the sohc motor , than the turbo, and all needed parts. Is this more worth while than a b-series motor?

peace

OH YEAH IT'S WORTH IT!!

Pro's...

WAY CHEEPER. no need for a new motor+shift linkage+mounts+wiring+more things
Get compliments from everyone for being different

Con's...

Less power capability(that's all I can see)

Just spend the 3000 bucks you would have spent on a B series swap on a Spare D series block build up, and turbo setup.

you can get a SOHC D16 past 400Hp if you have the time/money, and plus it would probubly last longer then a non built B series with the same power, as it has been freshly rebuilt.

IMHO

Built D16 SOHC + turbo setup
B series + turbo (just to many people who do this setup IMO)

Choose your poison

Honestly, I think once you get boosted your wallet is going to be empty no matter what. In my opinion, the cost of a "complete" d16 turbo setup will be around the same ball park as swapping a legal b18c. This has been discussed a lot, so the main thing that you should consider is how much you are willing to spend, the power goals you want to achieve, and your own personal preference.

SOHC is nice. but the DOHC will provide you with much better results. yes you can build the sohc with this and that, but if you do the same to the dohc the dohc will outperform the sohc. its your choice...

LMAO, I don't know why I'm laughing so hard since I have one(d16 turbo). But, that statement says it all right there.

In all seriousness, I am having doubts about having boosted my d16. Just recently I discoverd that the rod bolts are too small on both the D16 and B18b motors making it easy for the rods to pop out through the block whether boosted or not. I believe both the B16 and B18C motors have 9mm long bolts while the D16 and B18b have the smaller 8mm long bolts. Power is not my concern at this point.

I wouldn't worry about that. Those bolts are not going to be affected by boost. The strength of the bolts are going to be more affected by RPM'S.

Just don't miss a shift, or get a wrong gear. That's what will break them!

I'd say go for it! A guy back home had a D15B7 running 14psi on a GReddy kit with the little TD04 hairdrier. He would pop a short block ever 6 months or so, and could get a used block with less than 50-70k miles on it for less than $200 locally!!! Sometimes he'd even get the $50 special.

Sure, the thing only ran high 14's in a 5G Civic coupe, but it was cheap power.

You can easily run 7-8psi on that little turbo and make enough power on a D16Z6/Y8 to get you in the high 14's with street trim and good driving. Should be pretty reliable, alot more reliable than going with a big T3/T04E pushing 7-8psi on that block.

i appreciated everyones response. I guess i ll just do a little more research on the topic. Oh and one more question?, As far as tunig goes, is the greddy system a user freindly system? i didnt plan on running high boost, so ill probably go with the manual boost controller. But i was just wandering if i would have to worry about any minor tuning that can get annoying. Or could i just install the system and basically enjoy. Can an intercooler be painted blk. id like to sort of hide it, to keep that jdm look goin. I mean i would be happy with high 14's, or even low 15's. Im just wanting my car to stay fully functional. Well i guess that one qusetion turned in to a bunch. any help is help.

peace

it will come with a BLUE BOX, and that box is good up to 8 psi

greddy kit is good enough if u r not looking for LOTS LOTS LOTS of power
greddy kit is good enough to harass those I/H/E b16, hehe...
go to http://www.turbocivic.net good info site

. Should be pretty reliable, alot more reliable than going with a big T3/T04E pushing 7-8psi on that block.
What?

The bigger turbo should actually be MORE reliable, then the tiny one. The bigger turbo will be more efficent at the same boost level(less heat) thus not contributing to detonation as much.

AS far as spool up though, the hybrid would just SUCK.
