Default timing questions

i was reading about timing.. and stock is supposed to be around 16.. and it says the car can run safely + or - 2 degress from 16 so i guess a 14, and a 18 are attainable safely.. i want to retard my timing in my integra on boost, and i was curious if i retard it more than 14 btdc will it damage the car? after reading this i thot maybe i'll jst have my timing set to 14.

dunno, but I got a bump for u Christian.

If you need help doing your timing, I can do it for you since I just bought my advance timing gun. I have to return it in like 10 days though

NO, you can actually pull alot more timing out then that. On my car I pull 2deg per pound of boost(8psi=16deg), and i run around 14-16 deg. of base.

Your base timing should be set at 16 degress +/- 2 degrees, but under boost you will want to pull timing on a per pound basis. If you're not running an engine management system that allows you to adjust your fuel and timing parameters I would recommend a MSD BTM which will allow you to pull timing as the boost builds.

DAMN, are you sure ? you're pulling WAYYY too much timing per pound of boost...
you're basically at zero timing if not...

you can pull .5 to .7 deg per pound of boost. Depending on your CR rate, most of LS with 9.2:1 CR, you cna get away with stock timing ~16 deg, for most GS-R, you cna retard about 2-3 deg if you're running 6-8 psi daily...

loosing too much timing will cause your car to run liek **** at vacuum

thats the great thing about the btm ....stock timing under vacuum and retarded as boost goes up...
but yeah 2 degrees per psi seems a bit much....but if thats what it takes..

BTM is good if you're gonna run on FMU for a while, other than that, just retard 2-3 deg until you get a standalone or anything to manage timing under boost and leaving it stock at vac.

i'll let you all in on a little secret... (ps. i learned this one from Sonny)

If you have a hondata unit or similar, change the rate of timing cut.
ie. from 0-4psi boost, cut only 0.2 deg / psi boost; from 4-8psi cut 0.4deg/psi; from 9-11psi cut 0.5-0.6 deg/psi. from 11psi up, just keep the same timing as you have for 11psi.

now, there are some other little tricks I won't discuss. But, that will let you noobie tuners and perhaps some more experienced tuners quite a bit more HP and torque in the lower areas of boost!

I pull alot of timing because i tune on pump gas( daily driver).
I figure i will add a ton more timing , once i get it on the dyno and have my J&s safeguard.
knock is your enemy.

Even on if you tune for pump, 2 degrees per psi is too much retard. Usually .5 - .7 degrees per psi will net good numbers.
