This is a question I would like to ask aswell as I will be piecing together my own turbo kit soon as well as tuning it myself. The amount of "timing" depends on your exhaust gas temp. right? I mean if you want to know what it should be set at you need a EGT gauge right?

rule of thumb is about 0.9 - 1.0 degrees of retard per psi for a conservative basemap. You can then adjust it accordingly when you get it tuned -- .75 per psi is probably a good goal, just keep in mind every engine is different.
Another method is to step-retard, which is much better for the non-boost/low boost maps imo. If you are going to see dyno tuning, prob the ideal thing would be to find your maximum brake torque on the dyno then back off the timing a bit.
Just do a search and you will see plenty of info.
