I use a serial-to-USB adapter I bought from Best Buy (roughly $30). I think it's the same one as the one in the picture.
I use a 1.13GHz Sony Vaio with XP home.

I had issues with 2 different adapters in the early times and finally got the keyspan adapter like Hondata recommends. Never a problem since I got the keyspan. Well worth it. Hondata recommends it for a reason in my book.

All I know is that the USB to serial adapter does not work on the AEM units. You will need the PCMCIA serial card to connect. I would suggest try to use the USB adapter and return if it doesn't work. The only disadvantage to the PCMCIA serial cards is that they are alot more expensive and fragile than the USB adapters.
