question about running turbo without a wastegate...
here's the situation. i'm pretty strapped for time to install my turbo kit and i basically have just today to put it together. this is also my daily driver so i need it to get my around. i ordered a tial wastegate taht should be coming in any day now, and was wondering if i could hook up the turbo without a wastegate (for now) and not hook up a charge pipe and just drive around (like a granny of course). i WILL NOT be in boost, and will try to keep it in vacuum as much as i can.
you guys think it can damage the turbo in any way? i've heard that if you run it like that, the turbo will overspin due to no kind of backpressure, and will blow an oil seal very easily.

i wouldn't do it, why can't you wait until the waistgate comes in? another problem i can think of is, what about the open exhaust manifold where the waistgate would mount? i say don't do it.

Hmm.... yes.... very bad idea
turbo overspins
open intake (no filter)
open hold in exhaust manifold for exhaust to spew out everywhere

yeah it could get very messy. just wait until you get your waistgate and do it the right way the first time.

if i were to do it, i would use the block off plate for where the wastegate wouldn't be. i guess i'll just wait on it then.

And then you'd have all that exhaust flow going through the turbine, and no reistance to spin it down. Say hello to a destroyed turbo.

Doing it this way will actually blow your motor. ALL of your exhaust flow will be going out through the turbine and your boost level will be unlimited. Remember, a wastegate maintains the same boost level by diverting exhaust gasses around the turbine. It only lets enough exhaust gasses through the turbine to maintain your desired boost level.

theoretically you could drive it around just fine if you babied it...
and blocked off the mount for the wastegate.
dont boost at all.....

Do you understand what he's saying? He wants to disconnect the compressor piping, putting no resistance on the compressor. This means you have no way to limit wheel speeds, and it will reach max speeds MUCH sooner when it doesn't have to fight any resistance.

opps, forgot about that
If he does stay out of boost then I would say he can use a block off plate for the WG hole. At least the engine bay wont have the exhaust coming out of the WG hole. And if he does use a WG block of plate then he can also go ahead and leave the IC piping ALL connected. That way he doesn't do any damage to the turbo from leaving the IC piping not connected.
If he does all that and stays out of boost, then I dont see why he cant drive it around.
EDIT: so here's what I think
-use a WG block off plate
-leave all IC piping hooked up
-DO NOT BOOST IT
and he'll be fine, as long as he has his fuel setup working ok too. I still think it's risky, but if I had to do it that's what I'd do.

Re: (BlueShadow)
your right,it actually can be done as long as you stay out off boost, i think back at the situation when my internal gate flapper just fell off, which is the same as having no wastegate at all, i still drove home that way.for external if its not there then i would think it would be the same.
But with turbo lots of patience is needed so y not just wait for the wastegate and not have to worry about anything
