Default Popping and Sputtering at 5k?????

First of all I have searched everything...

I am working on a friend cars...

sohc 9:1 compression, rc 440's, vafc

Well the car runs and drives good normall driving, but when you get to 5k the car starts popping and sputtering... It will build boost, but pops and sputters, the plugs are gapped at 28. We have 93 octane in it, and have leaned it out, and richened it up but none of that seems to make it any better. So therefore i feel like it is an ignition problem, but that is why i am on here asking for any info or tips....

Please help...

One thing, we had tried alot of diff. ecu's... but when we plug the p28 that is needed for a d16z6 it throws a ecu malfunction code... on two diff. ecu's that work good in other cars...

The only code that was thrown was a solid light, wich is the Ecu malfunction code..

I'll bet it's your spark plug wires. I had the same problem. Finally, i went to discount auto and bought some $24 plug wires and it cleared up 100%

Just curious... which plugs are you running? Your .028 gap sounds fine.

So.... is your buddy planning on running the afc hack or did he just forget that he needs to install an FMU? It could be the hack is not properly set-up.

Hey, I know this thread is ancient but when you took off the distributer, were there any signs of it being bad appearance wise? Or did you just discover it was bad by replacing the distributer?
