For a while now I've been having this prob with my plug wire backing off from the cap. So thinking that my wire (8.5 msd's) were getting old I order new wire and for the hell of it go a new honda cap and rotor. The wire are still backing off from the cap which causes the car to brake up on the top end at wot. Any thoughts

You answered your own question. In order to use the MSD wires you must run an MSD cap with wire holder. With out it your going to pop the wires off the dizzy time and time again.

I'm pretty sure it's clearly written on the 8.5mm's box as mine said it.

This is like what your going to need. See the holder on the end of the cap? It's there to stop the wires from poping off, which happens under heavy load and high rpm.

 

i have msd wires and an msd cap. not that one, the black one, and zip ties have always woked for me.

 

Thanks for the feed back and the pic. I can definitely do one or the other the thing is I never had the prob befor and the car has been boosted for 5 years. Guess I got lucky for a while.

 

if your careful you can bend/spread the terminals that plug into the cap. it will give a more positive lock/click/hold into the cap. or use zip ties...

 

i noticed mine were loose the other day, i used a screw driver and spread the terminals apart a little bit. definitely fits snugger.

 

not entirely true i ran therm on a stock cap i took zip ties and locked the wires down to the cap

 

to avoid the ghetto fabulous approach i would recommend oem plug wires or ngk wires(whichever you can get cheaper) unless of course you can get the piece that holds them to the distributor

 

Back in the day when I was running turbo, I took some sand paper to the cap where the wires would sit and then I used zip ties.

 

I have the same set up as you...oem cap and msd 8.5 wires.

They kept popping off on me too...even with zip ties!!

I just spread the connectors apart until there was a positive "click" when i put them on the oem cap.

Works great now...no need for zip ties either.

 

The MSD's are garbage, unless using their POS cap the wires will continue to pop off. I had them on my EK and they would come off even with zip ties on them

 

i also dislike msd's mine would continue to pop off as well even with zip ties. and they would also pop off where they plug in on the valve cover... NGK blues ftw!
