Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line?
like the topic says, i have only 3k on my turbo and im getting smoke in boost, im running a flamingo t oil line kit with an itr oil pump on my b16a, the motor was just rebuilt, and shows 175 across the board, the valve seals are new. The return line snakes a bit (s curve) but is never going up hill. Im thinking it too much oil going to the turbo
what you guys think?

Re: Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line? (mrx)
highly doubt the oil line is the reason. i have been running a -3an feed line, -10 return forever. is it alot of smoke under boost or just a little? what color is the smoke?

its a blackish grey smoke after i hit like 7 psi. the motor has sick oil pressure i believe i hit 90 psi a couple time. Its just a little oil, also coming out of my compressor housing is a small black sludge like oil. This leads me to believe the oil pressure is too much

Yes if you see 90psi you really need the restrictor.
Even if you are running a -3an line.
Most CHRA's like ~60psi and thats it.

sorry for the little offtopic question, but can anyone tell me how big in diameter a -3an / -4an and -10an is in mm or inces?
here in germany the measurement in -xan is not known and i want to compare my oil feed line with the one in usa... because maybe mine is also too big so that i get too much oil pressure to the turbo...
Thanks
Malte

an is easy to convert
add 16th after the number
3an is 3/16
8 an is 8/16 or 1/2
all in inches

Re: Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line? (Boosted Chemist)
thank you very much...
very simple ;-)
but i guess when i remember my diameter correctly then i have a -4an line, which is way to big without a restrictor... what do you think would be better... put a restrictor in or get a smaller line?
by the way... did anyone use -2an lines instead of -3an? or is this too small?
Thanks
Malte.

No. that reading is only from the block ... Not the actual feed line. I just finished w/ D-Tunes turbo diagnosis. His restrictor was the killer of that turbo because of that same fear.
You're fine. run the -3AN

If the block reads 90psi, than the oil line will also. It's the flow that is the difference.
I would use a restrictor to get the pressure down.

Ya, I am pretty sure this guy is right. At least thats what I always thought. The pressure should be the same throughout the system, its the amount that flows through that kills the seals. Its like electronics as in voltage and current. The voltage will stay the same through the circuit but the current will change depending on the resistance. This has to be correct. The actual pressure does not change AT ALL even with the restrictor, just the amt of oil that passes by it.
So the turbo only gets that smaller amt of oil to compensate for the higher pressure which in turn save the seals. Right???
If I am wrong please explain

my turbo is leaking now, with 3an and smoking in boost, i think the high pressure is the killer, plus, the line is basically off the pump pv=pv so accually the pressure may be higher to compensate for the smaller line wtih a restrictor

You need to place an oil pressure guage inline on the oil-feed line. Make sure that you have at least 25psi at idle and that you don't exceed 80psi.

Correct. depending upon where you tapped it. You need to get a pressure guage AT THE LINE, and not just the reading from the block.

Re: Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line? (Dturbocivic)
I used an oil restrictor fitting on my -3an feed line.
Just because the line is small doesn't mean a lot of oil pressure can't build up in there. In fact, I would think the pressure would be exaggerated because of the smaller internal diameter of the -3an line.
My turbo was fine with my restrictor, never smoked, and when I rebuilt it the bearings looked mint, so there were no problems with getting enough lubrication or anything like that.

Re: Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line? (EJ1 wilcox)
What I did with my line is have an adapter in the middle of the line. I have a -4an line from the back to the turbo and it is cut in half. A -4an connector in the middle so I can easily remove it next time, plus I can easily put a pressure gauge there to measure the oil pressure to the turbo. I don't have a pic, but you should get it.

Re: Is is ok to run a oil restrictor on -3an line? (blaze the chemi)
Someone said it correct this has been covered a while back but unable to track it down for all you guys/girls..
I used a Z10 metric fitting right off the Oil pump and -4an =too much for a turbo, changed to a -3an and my seals were already toast with about 400 on the turbo. My turbo was also leaking in between the cartridge and the hot side housing, most of you with this problem will know what im talking about. If I used the -3an before ruining the seals with the -4an line I would of been ok but didn't know the -4an volume was too much with the Z10 fitting.
