Default Oil weight question?

I'm getting ready to turbo my H22. I was just wondering what weight oil you boosted guys are running.

Drag turbo install kit even recommends 20w50.

20w50 is WAY too thick. Good god.

I run 5w30 year round. About to change to German Castrol 0w30, full syn base, heavy 30w (almost a 40) and excellent flow on startup. Should be perfect for my driving conditions and climate.

Just curious, why do you guys run such thick oils? A straight 50? Why?

Motor oil in the tranny isnt doing the tranny any good. Tranny oils need different characteristics, such as surface tension. So motoroil in tranny

Thanks for the input. I myself think 50 weight sounds a little thick, but just wanted to see what others were doing. I think I might just something in the middle all year round.

at some point 20w50 will be as thin as 30 weight, and thats about 10 degrees in temp drop to go from 50 to 40, i go by oil pressure, the way i switch between weights it stays about the same through all seasons.

when choosing oil i stay away from energy concerving oils, that would be most if not all 30 weights and maybe some 40 weight. the higher HTHS the more stable it will be at higher temps, and synthetic in general will offer more stability.

But at startup it will be a 20w which for us, especially our turbo setups, is super thick. Not only that but why not just get a viscosity stable 30 or 40w @ temp if thats what you want to run?

When you say you stay away from energy conserving oils, do you mean you tend to go for oils that do not offer friction loss as a benefit because you do not trust that they lubricate and protect as well?
