Default is a 20W-50 grade oil too thick?

on my last turbo setup, i used 20W-50 on my B16. i then leaned out and blew the motor. now i'll be putting back the turbo and was wondering if 20W-50 oil will be too thick or should i switch to thinner grade oil. any suggestions which grade of oil would be best?

by the way, the climate from where i live averages about 30-32 degrees Celcius all year round.

i use 10W30 all the time and it seems to work fine for me. I just picked up a case of Redline 10W30 from lightningmotorsports.com. I think 20 weight will be a little to thick.

I personaly like 10-30 weight oil too. The way we run the clearances on hondas they runn pretty good at that weight.

why people run anything besides 10W-30 is beyond me. Honda's were designed for 10W-30, unless your running custom clearances where you might purposely want a thicker oil, run 10w-30 REGARDLESS of temperature, forced induction, anyhing...10W-30

If you want to run a thinner oil to help get a few extra ponies, that's fine, but not worth it IMO...

Regular Organic Non-Synthetic 10W-30 Oil user here!
I just change it every 700-1000 miles. I used to run Mobil1 Synthetic 10W-30 but after the rebuilt I never went back to it..as long as you change the oil often Honda motors do not require synthetic. My motor sees 9700rpm every single day and my bearings look like they are brand new after 10,000 miles of ABUSE.

I would recommend Mobil 1 15W-50. The 20W won't hurt anything, but it's probably a little thicker than you need.

YESSS...15w-50 is very good....that is what I am running...10w-30 is too thin on force induction....it disenigrates toooooo fast....too much heat...listen to those who recommend 15w-20 mobile 1

agreed.

I have friends with 450+whp street cars that get driven all over the place, every day, and they run 10w-30 w/ no problems

I run royal purple racing 51 which is equivalent to 20-50. It keeps the oil pressure on my car up a bit higher at idle. so i have always used it on my honda.

Actually, most honda's call for a 5W30. I am not arguing that 10W30 isn't great for our motor's, but most stock Honda's call for the 5W30.

I personly run 10W30 Mobil 1 super syn in both my Hondas...

maybe the reason 10w-30 worked for some is the weather. maybe you lived in a cooler climate place.

i live in a warmer climate place all year round, temperature ranges from 30-32 degress Celcius that translate to 86-89.6 degrees Fahrenheit . so i'll PROBABLY use the 20w-50.

my mechanic told me to use diesel engine oil rated at 15w-40. in fact, he put diesel oil in my car right now for break-in. he said he used straight 40 diesel oil on their race cars and found it to be good. by the way, that diesel oil is rated SJ so i think it can be use in gasoline engine but i'm still not comfortable in using it.

any thoughts?

So Im bringing this back from the dead, but i was doing some searching and I found this thread.. I recently installed my turbo setup. This is my second season and my seals are leaking alittle. I decided to use a thicker oil. I did a little research earlier and found to use 15W-50.

So I did my oil change and now im a little nervous. All these comments saying its fine is a lil comforting, but is there any potential for this thick of an oil to hurt my engine?

Did you use an oil restrictor on your turbo? If not then that's why you burn it.
The heavier oil should resist coking better than a thinner oil I would think. The slightly higher pressures might not help with oil getting by the seals though. With the proper sized oil restrictor on the line you'll probably be fine. (But if the oil seals are already wrecked the turbo could be due for a rebuild anyways).
If there's any potential risk I think it might be a little harder on the oil pump and may not flow as easily to indirectly lubricated parts, but that's probably debatable too.

royal purple 5w-40 here, but id never run anything higher then a 40 weight in a honda, the bearing tolerances just arent designed for oil in those weights.

the oiling system in honda's was designed to use 10w30 in the older motors. the newer honda motors will use 5w20 or 5w30....running thicker oil then it was designed for can cause problems with oiling in the motor.....think of a long tube with holes along that tube and pumping water into it....you should get a pretty good stream of water out of all the holes all the way down to the other end of the tube....now put something thicker in it like syrup and pressurize it and you will have a good stream coming out of the first few holes slowly tapering off as you get down to the end of the tube and there wont be much coming out of those holes. same thing happens as the oil travels down the passages in the motor if the oil is to thick. if 10w30 does fine in 1000whp turbo motors its fine for the small amount most of you guys are making
