I would expect the shop to cover the cost of the repair since it's their error. especially if the head comes off the motor. I'm assuming you can take the head off and reinstall it... so I would expect that the cost of new seals and labor to be covered, as well as a new headgasket. since there isn't really a cost for your labor I would expect to have them buy me a beer for my troubles lol.

you can't install a valve stem... those are part of the physical valve and have nothing to do with what the shop did... do you mean the guide? it's possible they got the installed height wrong. but otherwise I'm not sure what you mean.... did they do anything to the valve seats?
Oh **** I ment to say guides lol. Ya one guide sits about an 1/8" higher then the rest and when i press the seal as far as it will go on there is still a gap at the bottom, the rest sit flush.

I just finished replacing all the seals with the head on the car. 13 of the seals were not installed correctly! All 13 were like the one pictured above, halfway pressed on and crooked. They already bought me the new seals and gave me $100 back.

This better fix the smoking and oil sitting on top of the pistons issue!

Got the car back together and running. No more puff of smoke on cold start up. I also had my dad drive it again while I followed in a different car. There is no more visible smoke out of the exhaust.

After driving about 20 miles I pulled the plugs and there is still a little oil sitting on top of #3 & #1 pistons and #2 & #4 just look wet. I'm going to pull the exhaust again tmrw and investigate some more.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. I appreciate it!

post photos of the guides with the issues if you can...

across the whole head a few guides will sit at a different installed height, since the head isn't perfectly cast from the factory and over time there will be some core shift. I wouldn't, however, expect to see that much of a difference.

If the guides were installed at the wrong height or crooked then the movement of the valves will wear the guides out quickly or even snap a valve stem in half. If the guide is at the wrong height it could even allow oil to seep past the guides

Didn't he already post pics of the fucked up valve stem seal on the last page? I'd guess the little bit of oil issues he has now are just residual from that royally jacked seal.

Could be but if he let the motor get up to operating temp all of the oil should have burned off.

Ya the pic on the last page is of the guide that's is higher then the rest. Its on the exhaust side and I pulled the exhaust manifold today and none of the seals are leaking. And the car doesn't smoke on cold start anymore. I need go pull the plugs again and check the top of the pistons for oil since I've put more miles on it.

You should really get that valve guide installed correctly if you havent. Your retainer to valve seal clearance has just been reduced by .125". Thats a **** ton when talking about valvetrain clearances.

I had the same experience one time. Machine shop didnt get the valve guide installed height correct. And with aftermarket cams, just about every valvestem seal was damaged or smashed. I even found pieces of the spring from the valvestem seal in my oil pan...
Its hard to find a good machine shop sometimes..

Some Amsoil power foam might help clear all that residual oil out too

Damn that's crazy! In the future I may upgrade to some Crower 404 cams so thank you for that info. I need to talk to the shop again about that.

I just pulled the plugs and look at the pistons again and it look a lot better. No oil sitting in there it just looks a little wet. Thanks for the link to that amsoil cleaner I will look into that.
