i said "the o2 sensor makes ecu run a lil lean like 15:1, then lil rich 14:1, during closed loop conditions constantly to make it build up o2 in the cat then burn off the hydrocarbons and stuff, as apposed to having an air pump"

as u can tell i worded it kinda funny, but indeed did not imply the the o2 sensor itself plugs into the injectors and directly controls pulse width of the injectors.

and the fact of the matter is that while a narrow band o2 reading is better then nothing as a waring device of a lean condition, its is a terrible device to rely on, especially if u think it will actually make the ecu go into limp home mode every time so to speak (super rich etc.) u cannot rely on it to save ur engine, etc.
its also possible to be rich "enuff" to not even detonate but still over heat the pistons, and expand them until there ruined or nearly ruined, and destroy the sleeves cross hatch, or possibly even wear it out of round.

long story short, better then nothing, but u should have a wide band instead whenever possible.
maybe egt would be ok too i dunno though.
