Default noob, got some questions

well, i've done my share or research, but still have a few questions. i know you guys can help and its greatly appreciated, and correct me if im wrong anywhere. i have a turbo from a 89 volvo 760 laying around. i need to know which turbo is that from garrett, td05? is it the same as the td05-18g offered in the greddy kits? if it isnt, could i still use the same manifold or which could i use?

as for the wastegate, is it internal?
whats the round thing mounted on the intake side with a nipple sticking out and is attached to the exhuast side by some sort of actuator arm? is it the wastegate?
if it is an internal wastegate, what boost level would it be set on for that particular car? is there any way to disable the internal wastegate so i could use a tial, maybe? do i need some sort of boost controller, manual possibly.

i know of the oil feed and return line, but there's two other pretty large inlets or outlets of some sort sitting perpendicular to the oil lines, what are they? water coolant? they are probably like 17mm screws that don't go in all the way and have four holes on each one.

finally, would this turbo be sufficient to run 5-6 psi on a stock ls motor? what sort of fuel management could i get away with if i only want to boost that high? would a 12:1 fmu, missing link, stock fuel pump work or would a walbro 255 intake work with the fmu. could i get away with stock injectors?

sorry this post is so long, but i need to know what the hell im getting into. thanks for any help, l8rz

I'll see what I can answer...might be wrong though.

judging from the info you gave, it looks as though you have an internally 'geted turbo.

it also seems as though the turbo is indeed water cooled. I dont know anything about what turbo came off what car..sorry this is all I could help...seems like you already knew it though.

I did a search on http://www.yahoo.com and according to a site I found, the turbo size you are looking at is a Garrett/AiResearch TB0363 for the watercooled. There are also 2 other 89 740s and they list the compressor size as TD04H and TD05.

for those of you interested in junkyard turbos here is a list of a bunch of stock turbo cars and the turbos they come with.

If it has an actuator arm it is an internal wastgate (the little gold ciclinder) and I dont think you can disable it and use a external. the boost is probally set for about 11 lbs plus or minus 2 lbs. and a boost controler can only raise boost. Out of a turbo that small you should be fine running the set boost, but all motors are different.

You can have the internal WG welded shut and run it on a manifold with an external WG...unless you know something about the 89 740 turbos I dont.

EDIT: and I'm quite sure it's an internal WG, I dont think there is any stock turbo production car that runs an external WG.

so what would that mean as far as manifolds.... i mean which manifold could i use for td05, greddy? is a tb0363 even a turbo type, since i've never heard about it.... thanks for the info, i ran into the same site and it helped.... does anyone know where i can look to find how to weld the internal wastegate shut, is it simple? where would i hook up the water lines to?
