Default MSD 6al, good for boost or not?

I can get one for $100 from a friend, acutally i already have it but I have heard they are harmful on hondas, if I'm gonig boost should i get this (pay for it) or go with other ignitions , maybe nology's, that way i wont burn out coils?

thanks.

BTW EF with b16, planning on 8 psi.

I wouldn't upgrade ignition unless you need to. More **** = more **** to break / troubleshoot. Put that $100 somewhere else.

all you need ignition wise unless you plan on putting down some big big numbers, past the 450 mark, then all you really need is a higher output coil, i have the nology profire external coil, just b/c i kept having spark blowout when v-tec kicks in at high boost (14lbs).

How do you hook up an external coil, and what do you do with the stock one? So was this just a universal coil or for civics?
Thanks.

I am running an MSD set up. I cannot remember if it is the 6al. You would need to purchase an aftermart cap made by MSD which would allow the high voltage terminal from the external coil to be connected, after this you can:

1) Open the distributor and remove the internal coil.
2) Remove both wires on the coil remember which terminals they came from i.e. +ve or-ve.
3) Fish the wires through the insulation on the distributor where the other wires pass. This is very tricky and would take some time, the space is tight.
4) Attach the wires to the external distributor according to how they were removed.
5)Start your engine and go look for some V8 to put some licks on.

sorry, didnt check the thread for a while. but yeah, what he said^^^^^. its a fairly simple process to do, i mounted my external coil on the passenger side of the engine bay. i bought the nology kit with the coil, all wiring, and a shitty fitting cap. the best is get an OEM honda cap that uses an external coil, thats what i did b/c the one that nology provides fitted like ****. i can get you the honda part number for it if you want, i still have the box.

The MSD box isn't harmful by any means, but it's also not all that effective on a high revving Honda. The capacitive discharge feature works until about 3300rpm, the capacitor is able to store energy and release it multiple times during a spark event. But think of it this way, the higher the rpm of the motor, the less time the capacitor has to store energy and release it, that's why these boxes are much more effective on low revving V8s that make their power at much lower rpm. I think overall the benefit is that you get a stronger spark at low rpm, therefore keeping the combustion chamber cleaner. You may also get a more "crisp" transition into boost, since you are burning fuel more completely prior to that happening. I ran my car with the MSD box for years, I just recently removed it and am running just an external coil now, the car "seems" to run the same. I don't have any dyno results to give you the difference with, or without. The burden of evidence lies with a lot of tuners being able to make 400 plus on stock ignitions..

I have an MSD SCI on my stock D16Z6 in my Sol. It ran so much smoother once I installed it. Maybe I just need a new cap, rotor, and plug wires, but it does run very very smooth now. I also have to disagree with the comment about MSD not working well with high-revving applications.
I worked at my uncle's performance shop for 3 years and he'd tell me all these stories about all the different motors he had ran. He had this one SBC that he would shift at around 10,500 rpms in his '65 Corvette. He used a 6AL box and it worked just fine for him! He'd test other people's ignitions to see when they would cut out, and he said MSD always worked better. I'd tend to trust over 30 years of racing experience!
(But on the other hand, maybe he was just trying to sell some MSD!)
So, you might not really need it, but it certanly can't hurt!

one advantage you have with the 6al is the fact that your rev limiter with the rpm pill plugged in is now spark cut... alot safer than the factory designated fuel cut...
