from looking at the plugs how can i tell that i'm running lean?
i know that black on the electrode is rich, brown is stochiometric and white is lean. so my situation is, my plugs are black all over from the threads to the porcelain but it has white on the electrodes. is this running lean?

is their oil on your plug? sometimes the rubber washers on the valvecover for the spark plug holes leak and a little oil get down there... this happened to me... to big deal... just oil around the thread... if your electrode is white... u are rich... if it is white and oily... ummm... sorry to tell u this... but your piston rings are going; check your compression
realistically... i cant tell from here without more info

Re: from looking at the plugs how can i tell that i'm running lean? (sgT)
i did a compression test again yesterday. 180 across the board except for cylinder 3. that had a 175. the electrode has white but the rest of the plug is black such as the porcelain part and threads. am i actually running lean because my car backfires a lot after running it hard
