Default Introduction

Just wanted to say hello to everybody on here. Alas my search for a really "deep" technical forum for Turbo'd Honda's is over! Anyways this is Dave from Miami, Fl. I've got a 1998 Civic EX coupe (5spd), stock motor'd (D16Y8) with a recently added GReddy turbo kit (TD04H-15G) with a custom FMIC, GReddy Type S BOV, Vortech FMU, H22A fuel pump, manual boost controller (I hate it!) and GReddy timer. I'm now adding an Apex'I AVC-R, V-AFC, BBK 255lph intank fuel pump, bought a set of H22A injectors (330cc). Overall I'm very pleased with my turbo kit, I love the rush of the spool up power and of course the ever intimidating "Pshhheewww" from the BOV, but my turbo expereinces have been far less than perfect. My first problem is with boost control. Since I added the FMIC, my stock boost level of course dropped to less than 3psi on the stock actuator. I then purchased this MBC (spring and ball type) and have been messing around with it, but it seems like the spring is too soft or someting because after peaking at 6psi, it'll quicky drop down to 3psi, and I checked all the rubber pipe connections, no leaks. So that will hopefully be taken care of with my AVC-R. Next up, when I do maitain psi (the leaking only happend recently), anything over 5.5psi or so and my A/F gauge goes waaaaay lean, i'm talking right off the gauge lean. I switched to an H22A Prelude VTEC pump, but no deal. I mean it did help a little but, still way lean. So i'm hoping the V-AFC, BBK pump and H22A injectors will help that out. Of course I also need to upgrade my exahust system, I've got a 2.5" downpipe, 2.5" testpipe and 3" catback planned to upgrade my basically stock system right now (stock GReddy 2.25" downpipe, stock cat and 2" stock Si exahust). I'm hoping that aside from helping me on the top end, it'll help my spool up as well. So.. guess I wrote enough as an into eh? Heh, I'd just like to safley and reliably boost 8-9psi and run mid-low 14's, maybe quicker, what do you guys think? Suggestions? Thanks for reading and thanks for having me.

you're leaning out because you dont have the right fuel pump. If you're using a Vortech FMU with that intank BBK that is the reason. Get a Bosch fuel pump or at least the high pressure intank pump.

Well right now I'm leaning out because I'm running the H22A pump and it simply doesn't supply the fuel needed at 6psi. Itls kind of odd though because I hear of alot of guys with relativley stock EX's pushing 6psi or more on their stock fuel systems with the Vortech FMU, yet me with the FMU and H22 pump and I still lean way out. The BBK pump i'm getting is the 255lph intank pump, same as a Walbro or Holley etc.. so I'm hoping this jump in fuel will help my leaning out along with the V-AFC I should be getting soon.

the bbk.walrbo.holley all cant handle the high fuel pressure that is associated with a fmu setup. If you lower your fmu to a resonable rate and control the injectors then that would be better.

Hmm, to my knowledge the Vortech FMU is not adjustable. How would you reccomend I go about this?

vortec fMU would have to change the disc inside to a 8:1 or 6:1 and use a VAFC to control the injectors or some other device that can adjust in

Oh I see... and by reducing the ratio within the FMU, this would actually help increase my fuel delivery? I can see how it would help the pump keep up since it's a far less amount of presure being placed on it, but wouldn't this actually reduce my total fuel delivery? Also, where can I find new discs for the FMU?

that would help you out but you would actualy need to increase the injector pulse there by dumping in more fuel for every stroke the motor takes.

And I assume the V-AFC is capable of doing this (increasing the inj. pulse)? Again, do you know where I could find discs for the Vortech FMU to change ratio from my current 12:1 setup? And while we're at it, what ratio would you suggest with a BBK pump and 330cc H22 injectors? 8:1?

start at 8:1 and wokr your way down. Most places that sell the vortech also sell the disc.

You can also get the replacement discs directly from Vortech and their OnLine Store, if i remember right they are around $30 (www.vortecheng.com).

Also another solution rather than getting a larger intake fuel pump is getting an inline one, they work great, and i believe are fairly cheap..

Or ditch the vortech all together and get an additional injector controler and additional injectors,

with my DRAG im running the inline pump that came with the kit and an ERL MF2 w/ 2 Lucas 440cc Injectors (ditched the vortech) and that with some additional fuel via my APEXi SAFC at higher rpms (could also turn it up on the MF2 side) i have no fuel problems even at ~10psi
