Default Insurance and Boost?

I have a 1998 Acura intgra ls. Before buyin my turbo kit i was wondering how much insurance goes up if you list the turbo? My dad is worried if i get in an accident and the insurance finds out about the turbo they may not cover it. Im 17, about to turn 18. No tickets, one accident that wasnt my fault, someone backed into me. My current insurance is USAA.

i doubt insurance company will insure your car after putting on a kit that isnt carb certified, unless you go with the greddy...

but if there's an accident, the fact that your car has a turbo should never be an issue... the only time you'd need to let insurance know is if you totaled the car and wanted to get back money for the parts you invested.

I use progressive, and for an extra $90 every 6 months they cover up to $5000 of extra equipment. They're the only insurance company that I know of that does that. I had State Farm, but when my Si was stolen, they didn't cover any of my stuff, (turbo, rims, body kit, nothing...not even stereo)

So you can be covered, even if your car is modified. Of course, that's in Louisiana though.

I think I asked my insurance person that and they told me to just take a picture of all my stuff and keep in with my file, so if anything happens, they've got that to look back on.

Allstate told me they would cover anything that is bolted to the car, they have a 3000 extra coverage plan for like stereo equipment, but they told me that they would cover stuff like gauges, turbos, and rims.

you will be covered. There is no law stating that modifying you car is the cause of the accident. And any part that is bolted/strapped/or braced to the car will be covered up to a certain amount. I know progressive said they would cover me up to 5k and anything over i had to declare a higher value on the car but that made my insurance jump 360 a month. Best thing to do is call and ask your insurance if you modify you car will they cover the parts. The only thing that would happen in an accident is that they won't cover your aftermarket parts, but they still have to pay out for all stock parts.

there have been people racing on 485 down here, and if someone wrecks and the insurance sees gauges or any performance stuff on the car, they have been denying the claim.

nope, not here, if they are in any kind of front end collision, and the insurance adjuster notice anything like motor swaps, turbos, gauges, racing seats, they will assume you were racing, and dishonor your claim.

From experience,

StateFarm is a bitch... Was involved in an accident (not my fault, cops charged the other dood 100% for the accident) and SF didn't wanna pay because the car was modified. I ended up getting it fixed and flipping the bill myself. SF sent the claim to some commitee and over a month later it came back that they would pay for it... however they followed the payment up with a nice notice that they would no longer insure me.

Cliff's: Dumbass smashes into me; StateFarm gives me attitude; Finally pays but cancels my insurance.

If you still live with your parents, find out if their Homeowners insurance will cover your losses that your Auto insurance won't.

When my car got stolen, Homeowners covered the CD's, and misc items taken.

well maybe you just need some better insurance. If you noticed, i was talking about me and my insurance company which happens to be progressive. Not my fault you get dicked cause you didn't look around for the best insurance. Maybe you should of read the contract before you signed it.

ahhhh ok, then it's all good. I just know that progressive does a real good job with taking care of things. I think it's pointless for the company to say that a suspension caused the accident or that because i have a turbo, i must have been driving to fast. Progressive has always come out and looked at my car, looked at a hand written reciept(that's how the one shop did it) and paid me when stuff got stolen. I guess from state to state policies change.

Edit: Hey afropuff, is that you in your avatar, that hair trips me out man, looks good.

I have state farm and they covered everything i had on my car when it was stolen. It had been a 5 yr. project and i had $34k in reciepts not counting labor. They are liable for the "actual cash value" of the car. They gave all the reciepts and pictures to an independent appraiser and I ended up getting $18k for my 92 integra. Maybe you should look into changing ins. companies.

I agree. That's definately the thing to do to be FULLY covered- your rate will go up, though- Well worth it when something happens. My buddy has some Old Classic cars that he had to take to an independent appraiser to have the full value of the car covered-not just the Blue Book.
