can you install it using a different vaccum port?

like hook the source to a vaccum manifold?

Yes, you can hook it up to some other source of Vaccum.. I left the stock map sensor in place so that it won't leak and tee'd off a vaccum source from the manifold.

Go to the Junkyard for a Pigtail... They are all over the place and you only have to pay like 5 bucks for them.

P.S. Try Searching if you completely understand the install, There is Lots of info on the 3bar map sensor including install info.

i made sure that the map sensor was on its own connection, no tee no nothing.

you don't want the map sensor to mis read any of the info...
