how much shaft play is too much shaft play? and is there such thing as a natural amount of shaftplay
ok so i have a turbonetics t3/t4 turbo, and i believe it has a small ammount of shaftplay, and my question is how much shaft play is a performance damning ammount and how much is a acceptable ammount, and when to know to rebuild it?
and is there a natural ammount of shaft play in turbos?
and is there a natural ammount of shaft play in turbos?

Yes it normal, oil will fill in the space and tighten up this shaft play. If you have a lot of shaft play with oil in it, then you have a problem and should be worried then. But it's normal to have some side to side without oil.

there should be some up and down play but NO side to side. If if have side to side somehting wrong. The best test quick test i know if is to push one side all the way up and the other side down, then try to spin it. If it spins and doesn't hit the housing and you don't hear any scraping sounds your good to go.

Re: (Got_soy)
yea i was going to say you dont want ANY in/out play as for side to side if you can spin it still and the turbine doesnt hit the housing your fine

yea, i mean my turbo spins very freely, and it doesnt hit any walls or anythnig, and its really stif, only when you really try to move it, it loves side to side very very little, and i figured that was prolly bc it doesnt have oil in the housing to stiffen it up

my turbo isnt rebuild, its used, but i dont think it had been used much bc the shaft doesnt have any finger shaft play (like if you put one finger in the middle of the shaft and try and wiggle it, its firm and real stiff) and it spins super freely, i know this sounds goofy, but to test how good it spins, i put a vacuum hose on the intercooler side of the turbo to simulate air being pulled from the turbo, and even the vacuum was able to spool the turbo lol, i know that is goofy lol, but i was super curious as to see if it would or not lol but thats a good sign right?
