how much shaft play is normal?
I have a turbonetics t3/t04E that was used for roughly 4000 miles. The shaft goes up about 1/2mm and down about 1/2mm, so all together about 1mm of shaft play. is this normal for a non ball bearing turbo?
TIA

from what i was told, a little up and down shaft play is ok. Now if you try to push it forwad and back or fore and aft, then you're in need of a rebuild. don't quote me on this but that's what i was told.

You really shouldn't have any shaft play.My old t3 that i ran for about 2 1/2 years had no play at all (very little so minimal not even measurable). If your getting some play it's probably going to need to be rebuilt soon...just remember when that turbo is spooled (spinning really fast) if it's got any play it's going to throw the balance off and cause excessive wear on the bearings.

you will have minimal "side to side" shaft play, this is due to the clearances between the bearing and the shaft. the oil pressure fills this area. you should never have "in and out" play..
thanks
edit: excessive "side to side" shaft play is noticable when the wheels are hitting the housings.
hope this helps

The turbo in question has no "in and out" play, however, when moved up and down it seems like there is about 1 mm of full movement.
The turbine will not make contact with the housing, but it looks pretty close when you wobble it up and down.
Just trying to determine what "minimal" is.... can you actually see the turbine moving?

Lots of mis-information in here and a few correct responses..
You can have side to side shaft play.. You should use your own judgement as to whether or not its too much.. Its the in and out shaft play your truly concerned with.. If there is no in and out shaft play --- your good..

you have to rember that there is a oil clearance in there there is going to be some if not the oil will never get to the bearing that good
and did you try this when it was dry or put some oul though it and then spin the shaft and you will see that it will take some of the play up, and when the oil starts to get pushed out from under the bushing it will get loser
that is just my .02 cents

Re: how much shaft play is normal? (Drag_On)
this is getting a little confusing...please people, if you don't know don't guess!!!
I'm not very familiar with turbos so I wouldn't trust my own judgement on this. the shaft moves up about 1/2mm and down about 1/2mm, so basically about 1mm of up/down shaft play. the shaft doesn't move in/out at all.
would a brand spankin new non ball bearing turbo have any up/down shaft play?

Re: how much shaft play is normal? (metal-x)
i just got a t3/t04e (the one in my avatar) about 2 wks. ago and it has a little up/down shaft play, thats normal, dont worry bout it as long as it doesnt hit the housing and does move foreward backward or in out whatever you want to call it.
