How many of y'all use a J&S and would you recommend it?
I was reading a thread on clubsi from J&S and was wondering how many of you all are using one. I wasn't planning on using one, but San Antonio summers (100+ degrees)and 500.00 insurance for 5000.00 worth of work doesn't sound so bad (except I don't have the cash). I was under the understanding that a built bottom end, standalone, gauges, and a reasonable foot would keep you out of trouble.

I have it and like the extra piece of mind....but if you can get a Hondata then I would go for that...I didn't because I don't know of anyone around my area that has one and can tune it.

wouldn't it be a good idea to use a J&S safeguard, because hondata recommends that you disable the stock knock sensor. Correc me if I am wrong.

Before my Hondata, I had a J&S Ultra v.2 and had great results with it. It offers quite a few tuning options that are nice if you don't have a standalone.
Now I have a Hondata, and I have a J&S Classic. The insurance is nice, but it's a nice tool for tuning...drive...advance the timing...if J&S detects knock...add fuel or pull timing...drive...repeat.

I don't have a J&S, but something similar called a KnockLink, which I guess does pretty much the same thing. Very helpful in letting you know when something is not quite right inside your engine before it is too late. Also helpful if you have an external wastegate with an open dump pipe underneath your engine bay (how do you expect to hear "knocking" sounds in your engine when you have a wastegate sceraming at you??). My KnockLink costed no where near the $500 mark. That price sounds like an absolute rip off

I recomend it, but dont use it. Does that make any sense? Anyway, I drive alot to San Antonio from here in Dallas alot in my turbo car and I havent had a problem yet. If I had the money I might get it. Its a very good product and John and Shirley did a very good job.

Nathan:
The Knock Link is a knock indicator, while the SafeGuard is a closed loop individual cylinder knock controller. The Ultra V.1 has the added benefit of boost retard and mid-range tip in retard, and the V.2 adds an adjustable map limiter.
Is the JRBTC a better bargain?

For us LS ppl with no factory knock sensors, i think it's a good idea to get some sort of knock retard. If you don't want to spend ~$700, you can find the older J&S non-ultra units for much cheaper. I got a used orginal J&S that came with the GM knock sensor for $300, you can buy separate components to do all the features the ultra does and still stay waay under the $700 cost.

I would recommend it cuz my friend uses the classic ver on his DRAG 3 GSR. As for me, I wished I could find a way to use it but John Pizzuto never answers emails.. I've given up after 3 or 4 emails.

Thanks y'all. What's the difference between the different versions and which one should I get? I have a Hondata and will be running 9-12 lbs.

I highly recommend it. Whether you're using Hondata or any other engine management system and have it tuned perfectly, there are problems that may arise that will ruin your whole project (ie. fuel pump failure, injector failure, etc.). For those who advised not to get one, I really hope none of these problems don't hit you.
Since you are using the Hondata system, I'd recommend either the Version 0 (Knock Detection/Auto Timing Adjustment only - No Manual Timing Adjustment) or the Version 1 (V0 features plus Manual Adjustment).
