help me pick a turbo for my first b16 build
Hey people,
I just bought a 1995 del sol si with 134K and swapped in a JDM b16a with roughly 103k on it. I really want to install a turbo setup, but I really don't want to tear the motor apart anytime soon... I will get eagle rods, cams, pistons, etc. later. Now, I just need power for my daily driver, but I also need to keep the reliability.
My goal is 280 - 300 WHP on stock internal on 7-9#'s of boost.
As I just began thinking about it, the most important choice right now is which parts to use in my setup. I am thinking RC 750 injector, ramhead manifold (cuz they just look better and 255lp fuel pump. After that, I'm open to suggestions. TURBO is the thing I actually know the least about, so I really really really need help with that decision.
Thanks guys and girls.

The best thing you can do is to buy something that you will want in the future. Doing things twice really sucks. If you really want to get internals in the future, you will need to decide what your goals might be and most importantly you need to decide your budget. A regular garrett 57 trim will work well for your current goals and a lower budget, but if your future goals are going to be higher and your budget isn't as low, you would be better off with a gt30r, gt35r, s362, ect.

60trim T3, .60ar compressor housing, .63ar/stg3 exhaust. Good for over 300whp, and will spool up quickly. If you want to pretend you're getting your motor built within the next 10k miles, then get a 50trim t3/t04e with the same hotside as above. That's good for ~400whp on pump gas with a decent motor.
My friend had an ebay setup on an old jdm B16, and his 20-year old 60trim t3 made 250whp at 9psi - with the stg1 turbine and uberdata. He had awsome power from 3500 to 8k, as far as any street machine was concerned.

You really shouldn't concern yourself with the boost pressure needed to hit your goal UNLESS you're trying to stay within the confines of the stock MAP sensor. In any case, a 50 trim, 57 trim, or one of the GT32 series (offered by TheShodan) will be a great choice for you.

what psi would you run a 57 trim at?..to gain get around 260-280 hp?
garret make 54 trim and also 57 trim chargers, would I be better off with a 54 with the same spec A/R ratios in the turbine (0.63) running at a higher PSI to achieve around 260-280 bhp and a slightly quicker spool up time?
(but the 54 doesnt have the 360 bearing inside it (not standard anyway)) then theirs also the t60 trim..but i think that will make more power than i really want.
and does any 1 know a good kit that has this charger with it or is it only available separately outsourced?
i have b16a2...stock.will probs be sourcing all the parts separately but just doing my homework at the moment.

I just installed a Garrett T3/T04E .57 trim w/ .63 A/R and I love it. I only have it at a measley 3.5-4psi right now but it's still fun even if it's only 227hp

even 227 bhp is good....to have your engine stock and be able to tweak it up and down abit of fun on the street is cool.
i never thought id be thinkin of goin turbo! lol

The 54 trim isn't really a Garrett standard any longer, it now goes from the 50- 57 trim. The less expensive standard ones that you see are 270 degree bearing system. Only some other companies that use those wheel will upgrade to the 360 degree bearing system for better oiling and reliability.
what's the budget for your turbo, anyway?

It's completely stock but compression is a perfect 185 across the board though.

I have around 2000pounds for a turbo kit.I race company offered me 1 for around 3500 but i think thats too much.id rather out source it all separately...the 3 main bits that i want are the turbo, the inlet manifold and a good exhaust manifold.I wouldnt mind the rest of the bits from a 'full kit' to save some money.
im thinkin a hondata s100 ecu should be sufficient for a tune? and if not the more tuneable s300?
so i think a 57trim would be perfect for me running at 8-9psi....300whp from a 60trim seems like id be pushing the engine abit and id rather be safe than sorry....around 250whp would be enough for me...lol....
how much boost pressure can i run and still use my stock map sensor?
lol il need to get mine compression tested yet too...hopefully the same results! lol....

saying all this them edelbrock 'performer x' kits look ok but have a different turbo with them. they also say 'no additional tuning' required,lol....????~!!
and also what do you all think of www.turbo-kits.com ?
theres no real details excpet a few lists of the standard specs that EVERY turbo kit has...same things just priced differently with a different heading, lol.
the Greddy website has kits available from 2000 dollars.that seems cheap? whats a better kit, edelbrock or greddy?
