Default H22 or b18b?

Hey guys,
Ive been contemplating which engine to run for a while now. The B20 seems nice, but I havent seen a lot of b20 street hondas running 11's....So Im gonna go either an h22a or b18b...h22a= larger displacment, vtec, but weight problems. B18b= I would go nonvtec, R/S ratio isnt that good, cheaper, parts avaliable. So...what do you guys think? I want to run 11's on slicks, in a 2400 pound del sol, but it also has to be streetable.....enough to where I would enjoy driving it. Oh, forgot to mention, would be F/I....14-20 pounds of boost at the track, only 9 or so on the street.
Thanks

you just need to decide if you want to have handling off th track.

I want to be able to drive to work with this car in the warm months, but it doesnt have to be an autox car, Im more into straightline speed...couldnt I just add a stiffer suspension setup? Ive also heard the b20 is only 20 pounds lighter than the h22.
Thanks

The B-series swap would be much easier and cheaper in my opinion!!! I just put a B18B in my delsol last weekend. It went in very nice........ I just have a check engine light I need to figure out how to get rid of!!!

i would do the b18b for the mere fact that you will be able to drive it off the track(aka no handleing problems)

I have always been and will always be a firm believer of the b18b! I am partial towards the b18b for 2 reasons. 1) I have only owned Bseries motors and 2) H series motors dont look too exciting to work on to me, not to mention i have never really been a prelude fan.

All in All the Bseries will produce what you want in most cases unless you plan on going to a certain extreme. For your goals i think the b18b is plenty capable.

B18B
Pro's
- More people have done it
- Much easier than an H22 swap
- Best torque in the b-series basically
- Maybe the best b-series / honda motor to turbo because of the low compression
- More after market parts for b-series

Con's
- Head doesn't flow as well as a vtec head
- H22 has more displacement

H22
Pro's
- Lots of torque
- 200hp to start with
- Fairly cheap for how much horsepower and torque you get

Con's
- H22 trannies aren;t that great
- H22 weighs more (100 lbs more)
- Wouldn't respond as well to a turbo than a B18b
- Wiring would be a bitch
- Installation would be a bitch
- Very low red line

All in all... B18b would be better imo. I've been researching on the motor lately and have been very impressed with what I've read. just search for b18b or h22 in the FI forum. You'll get lots of good posts. I hope i helped.

If I was you I would go with the b series engine. Not only is the swap easier but parts are more avaliable and cheaper. The are no handling issues with the h22, I know because i have an h22 in my 92 hatch. Boosting an h22 is also not as safe as boosting a b18b on stock motor. my h22 is boosted and I havent had any problems yet but I am only at 4 1/2 lbs. If I were to do it all over again i would have gone with a b-series motor just because it is much cheaper all around.

Go lude man. Everybody thinks there is so much torque steer it is hard to handle. Not true. There is torque steer Im not going to lie but not to the point it cant be daily driven. You go lude turbo and u will run an 11.

That's a good question. Both motors are very good platforms to start with. The B18b is a little easier to install. It also has plenty of room for accessories, such as P/S and A/C. It responds well to boost and the stock sleeves can handle more boost than the JDM OBDI H series. On the other hand I have an H22 turbo hatch that is my daily transortation. It handles excellent. No problems with torque steer. I have had the swap for about 2 years now. About 16 months boosted. Still has stock internals and am making 314 whp at 12 pounds of boost. Run 8-9 psi 273 whp on the street every day. Have put over 40K miles on it and still runs like a champ. The torque of an H22 turbo is awesome on the street. I run with alot of built B series motors. I personally would go with the H series because that is what i have, but both are great motors. You can't go wrong with either one in my opinion.

You have to be kidding me, a JDM H22 revs to 7200-7800 all day long with no problems. And with the B18b you are looking at 7200 max. Revs would be a CON for the B18 not the H22.

Notice the dyno chart: (and as you can tell the power isn't even dropping off)

Holy ****. I went to your site to get your dyno to show the RPM's for the H22, and then I realized you actually posted on here. That's hilarious. And, I actually talked to one of the guys at your shop about your car a month back when I found your car in a search. Small world.

I have LSD too. Torque steer is minimal, but lack of traction isn't. I break them loose going into second and the turbo isn't even on yet. Not to mention I have the DTR wheel hop / traction bars. Does any of you EG H22 guys have any suggestions, other then the obvious. (ie. slicks) Could it have something to do with my HCP mounts, don't flame, I do have a budget. But just for the record it would be a joke to race a N/A b18b civic coupe or hatch, I walk all over them, not to mention GS-R's and B16's. I guess you just can't beat the torque for a Honda.

I don't have a rev limiter, but I never take it past 7600 or so.
