Default which gt30?

hi,

im looking for a quick spooling turbo which will make good power, so i thought the ball bearing gt30 would be ideal?

im looking for 350whp fully built block etc,

which version of this turbo do you guys think will be ideal for 350whp on 99 ron fuel? 0.63 exhaust housing?

also do you have to add watercooling lines?

Cheers
Dave

For those power goals, a GT30 is overkill. You could save yourself a few hundred dollars (to put towards other things) and go with something like a 57 trim or GT3255b (journal bearing). Sure, the GT30r is a good turbo, but people misunderstand its usage and generally buy it for applications where they're really not getting the benefit of the bb chra or wheel design. If you were hoping for 450whp, then i'd suggest it, but not for 350whp.

...if anything, a GT28rs would be your best bet

^ okay, thanks for your advice.

i also looked at the gt28rs but i thought it would be no good at that power and would run out of puff at top end lol

what version of the gt28 would you advise for my power goals?

does that need to be watercooled?

Ive seen the GT28rs (GT2871r i believe) make upwards of 425whp on E85 so i think you're safely within its powerband at 350whp. If anything, opt for the .82ar turbine housing and you should be fine up top.

Yes, it is watercooled just like the rest of the Garrett GT-R series of turbos.

I believe so, but i'm not entirely sure. There are also water ports on the block that may work for cooling the turbo, but again, i'm not sure on that. I bought a Borg Warner S256 intead of the GT30r because i didnt want to deal with water lines

I used a water line from my factory oil cooler which I removed (obdI block) to feed the turbo and taped a hole in my radiator for the return line. I'm running a GT3076R. With this turbo you will have a hard time running less than 340-360whp (on a b-series) because of boost control unless your manifold uses something bigger then a 44mm tial.

Just to clarify, Schister def knows his ish so I'm guessing he just typed to fast but the gt28rs and gt2871r are two totally different turbos. The rs rated for 330-350whp and the 71r rated for up 420whp on pump I believe. While the exhaust housing is very similar/identical coming in t25 or t3 style with different ARs, the compressor is what makes up the power difference. If I remember correctly the compresssor on the 2871r is the same size used on the gt3071r (basically T4 sized) which is good 450-500whp range while the 28rs uses a smaller T3 sized housing. I would recommend the gt2871r because I know it will get you to 350whp (the 28rs could be hit or miss it varies by application) and leave some room to crank up the boost.

^^Yeah i was in a bit of a rush this morning before class and to be honest, i dont know the different classifications of the GT28r series. I know i've seen a few of them make some really good power, but i they must have been the T3 based unit. I think you about covered what i attempted to convey though
