Default GSR pinging

Hello Everyone,

My GSR has just recently started to ping at about 9psi, which it was tuned for. I have gone through a few tanks of 93oct so its not a bad batch of gas, i JUST put NGK 7 plugs in at .030 and can not figure out why it is pinging.

the engine has 26k miles on it. all original

Thanks

im not running a wideband and i too believe its something with the timing because i dont think my tuner changed the timing at all when we went from 7-9psi

Just an idea - - put the old plugs back in and see if that cures it - - that would rule out and differences in tanks of gas.

it did the same thing with the old plugs

*that was the reason for trying new plugs anyway in addition to they were old

can someone please confirm what i have read, that the timing needs to be retarded "x" degrees for each added psi of boost???

yes, more timing without more fuel is going to mean pinging, go get tuned.

What do you mean you don't 'think' the timing waa changed? Were you present when the boost was increased on the tune? Did you see or talk to the tuner about the timing at all? Have you asked your tuner exactly what he did? Are you sure what you're hearing is infact ping and not some sort of metalic rasp from something loose in the engine bay?

im positive the timing was not changed seeing as the boost controller wasnt working for the street tune and we rigged something to the turbo would make 9.3psi on the dyno.

pinging = sound of BBs rattling around at WOT at high rpms

also i know its not something in the engine bay since it only happens on higher boost levels

First you said it was "tuned for 9psi", but now you said the controller wasn't working during the street tune so you rigged it at the dyno, correct? So at the dyno where you rigged it, you heard the audible ping? Was the tuner present or were you on your own? If that's the case then the simple answer is.. stop pushing so much boost untill the map is modified to compensate. As it is you might have already damaged the pistons more than you think..

yea it was "rigged" for 9psi but the tuner did it and it was tuned for that boost amount, but only on the dyno and the timing was not touched after the boost was increased.

how would i be able to tell if the pistons are damaged? leakdown? compression test?

btw drives fine at 7.5psi...
