Default b17 bogging under 4000 RPM's

ok.. i got a 1992 acura integra gsr 1.7L VTEC with the B17.

The car was bogging back in the spring. My friend advanced the timing a little bit (didnt use a timing light, but "eyed" it compared to his gsr).

After that, it ran fine.. no bogging, no nothing.

A few weeks ago, i was changing the spark plugs and they were a little white showed signs of the engine running TOO HOT.

so I changed spark plugs (platinum) and retarted the timing a little, not as far back as it was when i first bought the car.. now it is bogging again..

what could be causing this? im going to take it in to a shop and have a leak down test done and probably have him adjust the timing to stock specs.

but if someone can help me out and give me some advice, I would like to SAVE as much MONEY as possible.

Thanks.. what could be the problem? i only use 92 octane gas. fuel filter, cap & rotor, spark plugs and wires, all been changed recently.

You can only see the marks when you're pointing a timing light at the crank pulley. You can get a timing light from kragen or autozone for like 30 bucks, it's a good investment.

The timing light flashes every time cylinder 1 gets spark, and the marks are set up so that they show up in the same place and appear to be stationary when the light is flashing. You could see the marks with your bare eyes but they won't do you any good without a timing light.

so the timing gun flashes the different colored lights.. ok thats a good start..

now, stock timing is 16 degrees BTDC or something like that ( i know its 16 degree )...

Now I've heard that 18 degrees BTDC is alright too..

should i stick to the stock 16 degrees? all i have is I/H/E

No no, I'm sorry I don't think i'm explaining this too well. The timing light doesn't project the different colors. The marks are cut into the crank pulley; there's a red mark and a white mark on either side of the red mark.
The red mark is 16 degrees before TDC, the stock setting. The timing light just flashes so you can see how the red mark lines up with the pointer on the lower timing cover. Remember that you also have to jumper the service connector with a paperclip to be able to set the timing. If the red mark doesn't line up with the pointer, then loosen the distributor from the head and turn it slowly until the red mark lines up. Tighten the dizzy and recheck, then turn off the car and take the paperclip out of the service connector.

Your all idiots.. staying within spec isn't always right.. i'm 26 degrees advanced on my itr motor and my motor runs like a friggen raped ape..and i've had no problems for alittle over 6 months now...

Get a light this is true.. this is so true, but bogging could be do to a number of things... check your wires as well and your dizzy might need the coil or igitor replaced.. also try advanced your timing based on eye, if u know how to do it, do it until it starts tapping, then retarded it just alittle bit so the tapping stops..that should do your problem good.

I hope you're not serious. You may think your car is running like a raped ape, but it is in fact desperately crying for help. Go to a dyno and make a run at 16 or 18 degrees and then at 26 and then tell me your car runs better. As far as a bad coil or ignitor, this is very possible, but as far as drastically advancing your timing and doing so without a light, thats about the worst possible solution I can think of.

26 degrees? ya that sounds a little much..

well my friend advanced it by eye in the spring and from then on it ran good.. but i recently checked my plugs (NGK Iridium) and they were showing the signs of my motor running VERY HOT. They were a little white, and blistered.

so i changed plugs and retarded the timing by eye just a little bit so i wouldnt be running so hot. now it is back to bogging a little bit sometimes.

what else could be a factor? clogged cat? i changed my cap and rotor.. can i change my coil or ignitor without doing the whole distributor??

---> OldGSR, what is your timing set at?

Mine is at about 17 degrees (B17 yO). Having the timing overly advanced could have definitely made your car run hot. Are you still using iridium plugs? If not, make sure they're gapped right. Otherwise I think you should just set your timing to stock (16) and see if the bogging goes away, and if not then maybe get a new coil or igniter (which you can replace seperately).

no.. i changed the plugs to Platinum. I'm pretty sure i gapped the plugs right.. i havent had any problems ever.

i'm gonna probably just by the timing gun.. its gonna probably cost me more to have a shop set my timing when i can just buy the gun and do it myself for cheaper and have the gun to keep.
