Default Fluttering BOV

I highly doubt it's bad, but I was just curious . . . . I use to have a typ s bov, but I sold it with my last setup, and picked one up from "SIMPLE" but it flutters like (something fast is flying away) like a bird or something or a dog shaking off, is that normal, or bad? My last Type S made a nice whistle.

Get a stronger vacuum source, tap the brake booster if you haven't already. That should clear it up

I bought a cheap eBay BOV. it fluttered. so I slowly cut coils off the spring untill it blew off clean. (half a turn at a time) in it's instructions it said it was raited at 30 psi. I only run 10 so I didn't need the pressure of the spring that they suplied.

Try adjusting it first, if that doesnt work then give it a better vacuum source. however If your last one sounded fine, then it's probably just tightened to much.

and what exactly would that be? I have heard a ton of cars that have fluttering BOV's, but my last BOV didn't do that, so can someone clear up what compressor surge is? is it extremely bad?

So you are boosting and you have all this pressure in your charge pipe, then when you let off the throttle and shift gears the throttle body closes and your turbo pushes against all of that built up pressure in the charge pipe which is very hard on the turbo internals and causes the compressor surge that you are hearing. The BOV vents the pressure in the charge pipe when the throttle body closes.

yup I always thought the flutter was the bov but its mainly the compressor. I took off the filter for a while and it reduced fluttering 80%

Just to clarify, the HKS SSQ should flutter in vacuum and sometimes at low boost, correct?

Mine flutters in those circumstances, and as I understand it thats normal. If I give it good throttle it chirps.

Here's another tip, you want your vacuum lines as short as possible, From looking at the pic it looks like you could cut some slack off that line. Have you adjusted it yet?
another thing that will cause this is if your Bov isn't gettign a good supply of vacuum. Example if you have 3-4 things tapped into the one vacuum line(FPR) and you have the bov last in line this will also cause your BOv to flutter due to a lack of vacuum.

I would follow these steps,

1) cut some slack off that vacuum line
2) Make sure the Bov is getting a good source of vacuum
3) Try adjusting it
4) Talk to the guy simple, also that adjusting nut on top of the bov, doesn't look like the one Greddy supplies, maybe he lost it and replaced it with somethign else that isn't allowing you to adust it.

Nick, My roomate had the Hks and I noticed It did the same thing, in partial throttle/vacuum it would flutter.

i'll check into that . . . thanks guys. I don't want to blast anyone, just talked to SIMPLE . . . he's a good guy. he said his friend had it tightened down for 18psi which is maybe my 7psi can't open the BOV?

I'll cut some slack and check on the vacuum source. I had everything ran the same before and it all worked, but I will double check

that and make sure it isn't hooked up to a secondary source vacuum. thats what i had mine and it wouldn't open the bov unless i was full throttle. i also think your vacuum line looks very sketchy ie. very thin, make sure it isn't collapsing and it is excessively long.

i'll check into that I se tht ebov to as loose as I could and that helped out a lot! I got it to whistle with a slight flutter behind it. I even tried spraying some lubricant into the horn part of the bov to free up any parts that may be sticking. I guess I need to either check the bov line (perhaps get a bigger line) or try a different vacuum source. I had things hooked up the same way on my last setup and everything worked fine, but my last setup I had:

an internal gate rather then an external gate so maybe the external gate is taking up most of the vacuum or something?
