Dirt on your *****?
Of your Ball-and-Spring MBC - get your mind out of the gutter.
I took my car to a dyno for the first time Saturday, and was a little supprised that it was only boosting 6.5psi, when I thought it was set at 10psi. It's an autocross only car, and I really don't ever look at the boost gauge, so it's probably been over a year since I set it. I'm using a ball & spring setup with a small bleeder hole to allow the wastegate to close quickly. Anyway, when I got home and took it apart, I found that there was enough dirt on the ball that it wasn't sealing at all. I cleaned it up, and it's all good now, but I'm wondering how long it's been dirty and how often I should check it.
Has anyone else had a problem with the ball getting dirty on a MBC? I do run an air filter on the motor, but I doubt that it does a whole lot of filtering.
And if anyone's curious, my Turbo'd old school Civic D15a3 made a whopping 120hp at the wheels on a dynojet at 6.5psi. On a more positive note, it also had full boost and 140 ft lbs of torque at 3200 rpm, which is good for autocross.
