Detonation Woes...help!
Hi, I've done everything I can to help make my car detonation free, but my J&S Dual Monitor still has to retard a significant amount.
Setup is as follows:
Integra Type-R /w Drag Gen III Turbo Kit (at 6.6 psi).
Crane HI-6
PS91 Coil
NGK BKR7EVX-11 plugs gapped at .030". (Platinum)
94 Octane Gasoline
I dunno why the J&S has to retard so much...my settings on the J&S are as follows:
Boost Retard Start at 1 psi of boost.
Boost Retard Rate at 1 deg. per psi of boost.
Ignition timing at 16deg.
Running well into the "green" as well so I'm not running lean.
I'm thinking of upgrading my PS91 coil to a PS92 coil in hopes of getting less detonation.
If you guys could offer me any advice or help, I'd really appreciate it!
Thanks!
KJ

Sorry, I have STOCK injectors and a Vortech FMU with 12:1 disc. (12psi fuel per 1psi of boost).
The J&S Dual Monitor says I'm running rich...could the injectors still be a problem?

Hehehe...yes...at higher RPM's.
If I'm driving 75 MPH, and I tip the throttle in 4th or 5th gear. The J&S detonates even though the RPM's are only at 5000rpm or so.

do you have that airtex fuel pump that comes with the Drag kit? Because it sounds similar to when a stock pump is being used at high fuel pressure nad cant sustain the needed pressure at high rpms.

My J&S shows green, but it still might be running lean "on and off" because the injectors are crapping out or the fuelpump can't handle the the fuel flow right?
Can I run 310cc injectors without a computer (i.e. on stock ECU, with a Vortech FMU with just a J&S to tune with)?
I'm just trying to better understand what you guys are telling me and what I should do. Thanks for your help!

is it possible that the J&S is picking up valvetrain noise or something like that? where is the knock sensor mounted? you really shouldnt have detonation withyour setup...

I'm using the factory knock sensor and the sensitivity on my J&S is set a 9 oclock.
yes you can put 310's in and run them on stock computer. I'm doing it right now.I'm using an 8:1 disk in my FMU. you might need a higher disk because you'll be making more hp per psi of boost then me.
You stated every setting on the J&S except for the sensitivity. If you can't hear the dentonation but are getting monitor activity then it must be the sensitivity? What's that setting? The mutual consensus is that the sensitivity should be set anywhere from 9-11 o'clock on a street driven FI H-A car where the J&S is tapped to the OE knock sensor.
I'll do that.
Right now I'm trying a PS92 coil instead of a PS91 coil (borrowed it off my friend) and 104+ Octane Booster.
Next I'll try using copper spark plugs.
If I still have "detonation woes", I might look into RC370cc injectors.

Hey KJ. if you email me your phone # i'd like to give you a call to discuss your problems.

I think i know what we can do to fix this.

OK, so here is where I'm at now:
I upgraded my Crane Coil from a PS91 to a PS92 and I still have the detonation.
I used 104+ Octane Booster (along with Sunoco 94).
Today was VERY cold for summer...(around 55 degrees).
At this point, I'm still having problems with the J&S picking up detonation.
I don't think it's lack of spark, lack of octane, or hot weather.
Could it be valvetrain noise tricking my knock sensor?
Or does it sound like a fuel delivery problem?

i read somewhere that octane boost doesnt really do anything when youre already using a high octane.
So whats your fuel pressure at? Dont think i saw that anywhere...is it possible your running lean at higher rpms??? A/F or EGT gauges alone may not pick this up.
Have you had it on a dyno for A/F ratio at higher rpms?? If you have any type of AFC try to richen it up and see if it makes a difference. Do you have a FRP or just a FMU?
DO you have an after market ignition or just a coil?? MSD or similar helps.
And i second the ditching of the platnum plugs, not good for turbos.
