Crap I think I have a lot of piston slap HELP
So I built and ls/vtec with wiseco pistons (standard bore).
From the first time I started it it was noisey, almost like hitting to pieces of metal against each other. I think its piston slap but some guys I worked with thought it was to loud to be piston slap.
So I checking everything over and I'm not really finding anything. I have the oil pan and windage try out of the way and everything is tight but I noticed I can move the rods back and forth along the axis on the crank; is this normal?
I checked all the bearing clearances before I assembled the engine and they were all fine but maybe I screwed something up.
Is there anything else I can check to prove whether its piston slap or not?

Re: Crap I think I have a lot of piston slap HELP (model x)
Did you spin the crank over a couple of times with the timing belt on and have any interference (piston/valve interference) ? I didn't check my bottom end for connecting rod walk when I assembled mine but I figure as long as the bore is perpendiculcar and you don't have any crankshaft problems that you would have that of a large connecting rod walk. As per the installation instructions, the weisco pistons are offset and need to be installed in the correct orientation or they claim that you will have some cold-start piston slap.

I measured the connecting rod walk and crank walk and they're both within spec.
Here's a pic of how the pistons are installed; with the larger relief cuts for the intake valves

Re: Crap I think I have a lot of piston slap HELP (RCautoworks)
There is a bit of a change once its warmed up but not much.
Crank end play is within spec.
Oil pressure at 3000rpm is about 70psi idle is about 35psi, I think.
Compression is 180psi across.
When I measured the piston to wall clearance I was sure it was .005, which is just a little more than what wiseco says but it seems like the noise is to loud to be piston slap from being .002 thou over.
Ya I work with Shawn

If it was a rod knock (bad clearances or whatnot) it would sound like a professional wrestler beating a rubber mallet on a thick piece of hickory over and over. .005 seems large for wiseco. They recommend .0025-30 for mild builds, and ~.0010 extra for double that power. More than likely it is piston slap. If its tuned, let it warm up the coolant, take it on a 5 min beat run, then check for piston slap again - the expansion should have taken it away (if it is from clearances being too large).
Those oil pressure seem like the oil is still not warm, it should be 50psi at 3k, 10-15psi at idle.

Yeah, .005" is big on wiseco's, and then when you factor in that it could actually be bigger than that, who knows. Piston slap has kind of a unique sound though, sounds kind of like a diesel, it's not a loud metallic sound.

ive run a few sets of wisecos over the past years and they werent too loud. i mean over stock yeah the motor is gonna be louder but it shouldnt be "crazy" loud.
could also be out of spec valves, bad lma's if u are vtec, also larger aftermarket injectors can tick pretty loudly

Re: Crap I think I have a lot of piston slap HELP (blackeg)
I checked my bearing clearances twice before assembly so I'm confident they're ok.
I do have RC 550cc but they ain't that loud. I adjusted all the valves after the build so they're ok.
I've never heard a bad lma before, is there anyway to check them?
The motor only has 250kms on it so far so its not broken in yet, but once it has some more mileage on it I'll beat on it and see if the noise changes.
Ya diesel is a good description of the sound actually.

you did re-adjust the valves right?
I had a friend that was complaining of excessive noise upon start up, turns out, never did a valve adjustment and they were crazy out of wack.
