Default Compressor surge after intake install

After running open turbo for the last two years, I finally got a radiator/fan setup that will let me have enough room to install a filter. Nothing fancy, just a 45deg silicone elbow, a short piece of piping, and a K&N.

Before I installed the lil guy, I would never hear any compressor surge, just my Greddy Type-S doin it's thang. But then the intake came on, and now I would hear the BOV AND surging.

I'm trying to think what factors would've changed that lead me to this?

Air velocity is considerably less now that there is a filter thus I have to adjust the BOV to a softer setting?? And yes I have adjusted it softer but it's still doing it (the surge). How soft should I go? and more importantly, why does this call for a change because of a simple filter?

BTW I can only hear the surge if I go WOT

your demand your calling for has changed at wot man.
you are now not supplying that amount of air due to restricting it with the filter.

Did you do any math to figure out if the filter you chose would flow adequately for your setup? I assume not.

I honestly just shopped around for a filter that would fit. This particular one has a pretty unique dimension, angled neck and super slim up top and in general.

How would i even calculate the flow?

This is what I originally had assumed, but then I've had some people tell me that I have always had a compressor surge but now that I have a filter on there, I can hear it

I don't know who to believe

LOL I laughed when I saw that filter too.

Call or email K&N with the part number, they can calculate the surface area and give you a CFM rating. Its probably OK unless youre making over 300hp.

All you need to do is... SEARCH -

http://www.knfilters.com/filter_facts.htmll

Then find out your turbo flow (most likely LBS per Min) and if needed convert to CFM for your guesstament (because obviously it isn't a direct conversion) and you have your info. It is really simple.

I'm running a filter with about 2/3's the surface area of that one and taking it off on the dyno netting no change in power at ~500whp.

I'm not hearing anything out of the ordinary here, perhaps something slightly reverted, but nothing huge. Surge is very apparent.. He's shifting a bit fast. i was hoping for being in gear going into boost gradually into full pressure, then shifting to another gear. Not power pulls.

Either way, a filter won't cause the surge, but it may be the valve is tightened down too much for the boost pressure being run.

Took another vid, I don't know if you can hear the difference in the BOV sound when it's partially in boost and then at a higher boost level
