Common mistakes/problems with Turbo.
Whats up guys, I will be boosted by June and I wanted to get feed back from everbody who is or have been boosted.
1. What are the typical and common mistakes in a turbo install?
2. What are the common problems with the car that you all have run into after being boosted? Basically anything tha has given you constant annoyance...and problems.
3. How did you guys fix it?
4. What are the normal routines and maintenance you do for your boosted car? Besides of course the religous Mobil 1 oil change every 2500 miles, the routine check for oil and vacuum leaks, and replacing the spark plugs every third oil change. Anything would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Khoi

Maintenance I've done/am doing in the next few weeks on my 120k turbo D16Y8:
-fuel filter
-spark plugs (NGK ZFR6F-11)
-spark plug wires (OEM Honda)
-cap and rotor (OEM Honda)
-Seafoam through the motor ($4 @ NAPA)
-valve adjustment
-coolant flush/refill/bleed
-ACT HDSS clutch install
-retard timing 1 degree @ the distributor
-replace tranny fluid with GM synchromesh Friction modified (for those quick smooth shifts
)
-run injector cleaner through gas tank (Chevron w/Techron
)
Probably other stuff, can't think of it off the top of my head.
As for the turbo install tips:
- Get a BSPT fitting for the back of your block, NOT NPT. Get them from Flamenco-T or elsewhere locally.
- Take your god damn time.
- You WILL break something, so plan on a few trips to the parts store. I broke an A/C line when my jack slipped lowering the vehicle
- Buy a bunch of vacuum lines (1/4"), vac. T's (3/16"), various hose clamps and couplers. You'll need them at some point.
- If you're making a custom kit, keep on reading on here as far as what else you'll need.
- Double, triple and quadruple-check your oil feed/return fittings and connections. I got stranded in the middle of the night after getting my car running because my feed line came loose and spilled oil everywhere.
- Make sure your piping and vacuum setups are tight. Boost leaks are a bitch.
- Run your BOV off of your brake booster, and run your WG off of your FPR. Run the boost gauge and boost controller off the cruise control line, if you have it.
- Have GOOD fuel management ready to be installed.
- TUNE.
- TUNE.
- TUNE.
- TUNE.
- TUNE.
- Have lots of extra money set aside for when stuff breaks.
- Have a beater around for when your car breaks down or has downtime to get worked on.
- Have patience, because turbo's like a hot, high-maintenance girlfriend - it'll be heaven if you treat it right, and hell if you don't.
- Read up here on H-T and ask questions so we can help!

after you do the install check on your motor frequently, more than you usually do. after i did my install the other week i pretty much pop my hood everytime i'm about to roll out - just to check for anything unusual.
yeah great thread, good tips!.. ill be installing my turbo in about a month or so as well.. anyway, sorry to thread jack but a brief question on the GE vacuum manifold...can u still tap into the brake booster line, will that be enough "vacuum pressure" to supply the number of outputs you have on the manifold?
Great thread!
I am also in the process of putting together a turbo kit for my car and the comments so far have been very informative!

Here's a few more, my fellow stunnas:
- for every 75-100 extra HP you're making, go 1 step lower in plugs. For example, if you have a 100 hp civic motor like me, and you're running 7 psi - figure 1 psi = 10 hp, so I'm making 170whp. So I get a 6 series heat range plug (stock is 5). If I make more than 200whp, I'll go to a 7 series heat range.
-what plugs should you buy? NGK's nothing else. If you have a SOHC, get a 6 series plug if you're under 200whp. Which one? If you have a D16Z6, get a ZFR-6J11 (or something like that), or if you have a D16Y8 like me get a ZFR-6F11 (or something like that) from the parts store.
-What type of oil should you use? 5W-30 or 10W-30 seems to be the general concensus. Synthetic or not? I run Castrol Syntec Blend 5W-30 , $2.50 / Qt.
-what type of fuel management should you go with? God, that's a whole nother thread - depends on how deep your pockets are.

No worries. Seafoam is a motor treatment that cleans out the carbon deposits in your motor and helps it run like new. It's awesome apparently!

1. What are the typical and common mistakes in a turbo install?
Not sure about installation, but as for choosing turbo setup, people don't research enough and get oversized turbo and possibly wrong size piping for whp. skipping on fuel managment, and quality of parts. my mistake was not getting oil temp gauge that was peak-n-hold. i also found that i almost never use boost gauge and refer to boost controller for peak-n-hold readings.
2. What are the common problems with the car that you all have run into after being boosted? Basically anything tha has given you constant annoyance...and problems.
Even if you manage to get the best of parts, and install everything right, you're still not problem free. I managed to blow intercooler piping, ahd to re-adjust clamps and such. and had problems with wastegate bolts snapping/unscrewing. blowing headgasket and piston rings.
4. What are the normal routines and maintenance you do for your boosted car? Besides of course the religous Mobil 1 oil change every 2500 miles, the routine check for oil and vacuum leaks, and replacing the spark plugs every third oil change. Anything would be very helpful.
I change sparks every 3k miles, and change oil a little earlier now.. probably every 2K (conventional oil). I also use higher weights since turbo just heats everything up a lot (theres no way i'd run 5w30 in this weather). i used 5w30 during freezing winter (i'll probaly use 5w40 next winter), 10w40 during spring and 20w50 during summer. I also check oil level almost every day, monitor oil pressure and soon to get oil temp gauge.

Very great post!!
But if you consider the motor is tuned and running a conservative boost level, wouldn't your risks of a blown headgasket and fried piston rings be less likely?? In my case..I consider 7psi daily/10psi race conservative on a stock 00' b18b w/ 34k miles/hondata s200b/rc 550s/255 lph HP intank fuel pump on 93 octane.

i always had it properly tuned w/ stanalone whenver it was modded.. unfortunately, it doesn't stop tear/wear.. So at 34K you should be ok for some time.. just keep your hp low and it wil last longer. once it goes, its not the end of the world, rebuild as long as funds allow and keep going.
