Default Clutch Advice

I need advice deciding on a clutch for my build up. I plan on making 300~350 ft/lbs of torque. I want the most streetable clutch that can reliably hold the power.

Ive done a ton of research and ended up torn between the Clutch Masters Stage 4 and ACT XTR6. I found that most people on here either love/hate both companies. And Ive found threads on both clutches being destroyed or having problems sometime or another. Both clutches should be able to hold the kind of power I'll be making.

It seems there might be a few more people who had problems with Clutch Masters than ACT but the difference was minimal. The ACT Extreme Pressure Plates tend to be very harsh on the street. 95% of my driving is city.

Is it possible for a clutch to hold that kind of power yet not be ridiculously hard to engage smoothly, chatter or wear fast?

what do you look for in a streetable clutch? pedal stiffness? short or long area of engagement? how hard it grabs? price? there are a few out there but all of them give up something to gain another.

Ive had experience w/ both clutches. I do not like the act xtr6, and i really think it was the cause of my motor blowing. the heavy pressure plate puts so much stress on the crank, i think it caused my thrust washers to fail. The CM stage 4 to me is good for your setup, i have not had a problem w/ it, and ive had it for over 2 years. The pedal pressure is much softer than the damn ACT which feels like a brick.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I can tolerate a pedal stiffness that is roughly twice as stiff as stock which is really too soft IMO. Id like to end up with a clutch that isn't an on/off switch. I want something that is strong enough to hold the power and heat of multiple track launches but able to modulated when starting from a hill or 3 point turns, whatever.

Price isnt really an issue but Im not buying a Tilton! I want whatever is best for me.

haha alright so twin disk is out...

The ACT extreme/6puck has a stiff pedal feel(more then twice stock) and grabs pretty hard since its a 6 puck. Ive seen this clutch break alot of axles.. What you could do is run it w/ a street disk which would make it not grab so hard and give you alot longer window for engagement. But then it wouldn't hold 350tq either. Or you could run the double extreme w/ a street disk to hold the power but then pedal pressure would be really bad.

The Clutchmaster stuff has really nice pedal pressure though. Just barely stiffer then stock. Ive never driven a stage 4 but Ive driven the stage 5. The stage 5 grabbed hard and also had a real short window for engagement. The stage 4 is sprung so I would think that would make it more streetable. Can't say because I havn't driven it. I know hybrid901 had a stage 4, maybe if you shoot him a PM he could tell you a lil about it. (i think he blew it up too and destroyed his tranny )

so tilton twin disk carbon/carbon is out of the question?

Get a strong Pressure plate and a full face Sprung Clutch...I like the Clutchmaster Stage 3 Clutch...That should be good for your torque goals and will be easy on your crankshaft as well as traffic jams...

Yeah theres no way Im gonna spend a grand for a Tilton. Thats way overkill even for 500hp IMO.

I agree about the ACT XTR6. However I feel if I went with the XTSS that it wont be able to hold the power or the heat of high rpm launches on slicks.

I also agree that the ClutchMasters sounds more streetable. However many sources have told me that a 6 puck clutch is supposed to be alot less harsh than a 4 puck which doesnt agree with the XTR6 vs CM Stg 4 argument. So it must be the pressure plate that makes the ACT XTR6 so harsh?

I dont think the CM Stg 3 is going to be enough for me. I also have PM'd Hybrid901 and he had good things to say about the CM Stg 4.

I think where Im ending up is wanting something between the ACT XTR6 and XTSS which I think would be the CM Stg 4.

Its so hard to make a clutch decision without driving it.

Well if you compare the harshness of a clutchmaster to an ACT you run into problems because ACT puts more of the power handling into the diaphram while clutchmaster does it more in the disk. The CM stage 4 really sounds like the clutch that is perfect for you, but like you said, w/ out driving it its hard to tell.

I got it from Kyle @ Wiredspeed, so you might want to ask him. I like it, I mean I haven't got on my car yet - she needs to be tunned. The pedal pressure is stiff, but you'll get used to it after you drive it for a week or 2.

I talked to a few people with the 2MD and it sounds as harsh as the ACT XTR6.

Does anybody NOT like the CM Stg 4?

How does the pedal pressure of a CM stg 4 compare to the ACT Heavy Duty pressure plate? or even the Extreme pressure plate?

i had a clutch master stage 4, and now i have a tilton.

IMO the tilton is way more streetable then the cm. the pressure feels pretty much the same. not too hard and not too soft, theyre not as stiff as the ACT xtreme.

Dude the clutch u want is the CM stage 4, pedal pressure is perfect for fast shifting, chatter is very low when u learn to drive it, and ive launched mine bouncing off the rev lmtr w/ slicks and its still holding up. Plus i chirp 4th so it grabs nice
