Clutch 101 by Rocket
For all of you OEM guys- Exedy's standard clutch is identical to Honda's (Exedy makes Honda's clutches) with the exception that it also comes with the unity disc. This disc is much more reliable than the stock Honda disc due to its forged spring retainers and single piece marcel construction. I see Honda's stock clutches fail from the springs popping out of the hub all the time. (particularly with abusive driving) The downside to the unity disc is slightly more drivetrain noise (from stiffer springs)- mostly on decel. The S2000 has this same noise. This clutch can be had for $110 (complete kit) shipped from clutchcity online - Rocket may or may not be able to offer a better deal.
I would imagine since it is a direct replacement for OEM. That is- there is no performance benefit other than the fact it might not fall apart as easily and it may have a firmer engagement from the thicker marcel springs. Kind of like installing longer life headlights with the same wattage.

I have a Clutchnet Stage 2 Clutch Sprung 6 Puck pairing up with a ZEX 10.4 Lb. Jay
I personally don't like ClutchNet. 2 reasons.
1) They use Valeo pressure plates. This is a economy brand to put it nicely.
2) The friction pads they use will eat your flywheel and pressure plate.
They do however make some of the best discs. They in fact make about 75% of all aftermarket discs.

Well thank you Rocket...Im buying a new clutch soon and needed this thread.
My question should be fairly simple. You say organic is bad under high load and high temps. I'm only running an LS motor with basic bolt ons (I/H/E/IM/TB) and only launch at 2500-3000 RPM on the rare occasions that I do make it to a track (closest one is hours away). Would the ACT organic street disc and heavy duty pressure plate work in my case?
On another note...how much does the Action kit go for?

Thank you Rocket, the information has truly been educational.
I just wanted to get your opinion on a few things.
Lightened flywheels? good or bad
aluminium or steel?
have you ever seen a hayame clutch?
looks like a clutchnet or clutch specialties
Thank you again

I haven't seen the Hayame clutches but the name just sound like a gimicky company trying to catch the import hype.
what site could i buy Action Clutch and so i can see what they offer? what price would you give us ?
If you want to buy one see my Action Clutch Group Buy post for more info then feel free to contact me.
Just a couple more questions
Have you actually seen a warped aluminium flywheel, and if so what kind of clutch were they using?
Your feelings, or experiance with the chromoly lightened flywheels (jun, toda, zex)
I am obviously looking to buy a lightened flywheel, and I hear alot of different opinions. Just trying to gather some facts to base my decisions on.
Thank you again

Chromoly flywheels warp. No joking. We had one in the other day (JUN) and it was horrible. Couldn't even resuface it. I've never seen a stock flywheel warp.
Aluminum flywheels are better since the part that warps is the steel plate and that can be replaced.

I just went on down to Action earlier this afternoon... Alex does seem to know his stuff. I went down there originally wanting to get a dual-diaphragm plate and a segmented kevlar clutch but decided to get a 6-puck Miba friction disc w/ a sprung hub and keeping my ACT HD P/Pl instead.
I dunno... I'm not sure how the kevlar was bonded to the friction disc, and the friction disc itself seemed a little thin... The hub is a solid piece though, 6 rivets hold it together.

What are your thoughts on the Clutchmasters Twin Disk set up, I know they are expensive and should be used for racing, But what about the few "high" horsepowered hondas here, can they benefit from this twin disk set up? Since theres two clutch disks, they can share half the load, wear less and handle anything you can throw at it. For streetability can you put together oh say two stage 3 disks and daily driving wont be a problem? Well, in anyway- what are your thoughts on this?
I have seen one twin disc set-up for Honda's and I know some people who've run them successfully. I haven't checked if the two smaller disc have less rotational inertia than a six puck but I would say the twin disc has more inertia.
The thing about having two discs is that you are increasing the torque capacity alot without having to increase clamping pressue. That's a cool concept.

bump ^
I like this article... so it deserves a bump...
Considering I just picked up a ACT AI4-XTR6 (extreme pp w/ 6 puck unsprung)...
Does anyone have a definative idea of what I'm looking at ? I have used the CM Stage 3 and it lasted 2 years (50% was nitrous use and 50% was turbo use)...
Is this clutch gonna be a TOTAL pain in the ***, destroy anything.. etc... I have read the whole thread and just want to hear from anyone who's running this or has experience with it...
btw: for whats its worth I looked at a couple different companies and ACT and CM were one of my two choices... with RPS a second and Clutchnet third... price was around what I expected/accepted (LOL).. so I got it..
??anyone??

The friction pads on ACT discs tend to fry, flake, turn black, and disentegrate. Send your disc to me and I'll have high quality Miba pads installed on it. This will make the clutch engage better, last longer, etc. You'll be much happier.
Just drop me a line.

Rocket,
I would be interested in some pictures of these action clutches. Could you post some?
What would you recommend for 2000 civic EX, greddy turbo @ most 9psi? Its my daily driver. I like to drive conservative and I like to get on her more than I should but ya know the BOV just makes me want to boost
I also will goto the track once and a while and autox maybe once a month.
I am still on my stock clutch because turbo was just installed this past weekend. It is not slipping yet so I would like to wait 1 month before buy and do more research on clutch and flywheels.
Could you do a flywheel 101? Or recommend something for my setup. Thanks Great post btw!

On most turbo apps I recommend a dual diaphram 2MD. This gives you the most insurance againts high torque slippage. The 1MD works fine for NA and lower boost (less than 10lbs) applications.
Even though I'm a bit late here...
Great thread Rocket. I'll have 2point6 give you more info on SPEC / STAR clutches next week, along with photos. Evidentally, many of the World Challenge cars use SPEC / STAR clutches... comfortable pressure plate, but they hold a lot of power.
Rocket,
for you!
