Default breaking in motor need advice....

i am breaking in my b16 that has crower rods and ross pistons...

i am running the aem ems and its running really rich right now.

question 1... it being to rich bad for the motor during break in??

??2... i know the general break in guidelines but how many miles should i run it for before going into boost... i thought 500 was ok... but people are saying 1000-1500

running rich is bad for breakin because it washes out the rings and prevents sealing. and dont ***** that motor around like that thread says, take it to redline a couple times, then let off and leave it in gear, let it decel all the way down to idle still in gear and loaded, then do it a couple more times, that bathes the rings in oil on decel and the loaded pass loads them, nothing will help them seat better. trust me, i've done more than i can remember like this and never had a problem.

yep, take it to redline a few times and let it deccelerate on it's own...

when I broke my motor in, I drove it around for a few minutes and I'd rev it to 7000ish rpm once or twice on first and second gear a times or two...

vary the rpm. don't get to carried away with it for the first 500 miles or so but after that it's free game. your rings should be seated within the first few miles.
the two things that will ruin a new engine....constant full boost, and constant rpm....i.e freeway driving.

The dyno seems to be a very hospitable place to do a breakin. Set all the values&variables accordingly, then let it out on the road.

hmm wow this worries me then ...

i had a 30 mile freeway trip back home from the the shop...

i was consistantly going between 3500-5000 rpm's on the highway.

back home i have taken the car the school a couple times and to work once... i managed to put on 80 mile or so.
so far i only went in to boost for one milisecond if that to pass a slow car going like 35 in a 55 and that was only 4 psi.

i noticed smoke coming from my breather filter.... at idle when i step on the gas a little bit

so i am really confused and worried now.

You should be fine because you didn't keep the rpm at the same point for the whole trip (like driving at 65mph the whole time). As far as the breather filter goes, get rid of it.....I posted about them a few days ago....look it up if you like....

I have been told by my dad and a few of his friends (old school muscle car racers) that 20mins at 2000RPM is all the break-in that a new motor needs. He said after this the motor is warmed up and good to go. I mean, look at race engines, they never see 1500miles, let alone a 1500 mile break-in.

true, but you do want to vary the rpm because otherwise the bearings will break in at that given rpm....(think of it like sanding a piece of wood, sand in the same place for 10 min then try sanding the whole piece there will be a groove where you sanded first)....another thing you have to remember....most race engines don't have long break in periods because they don't need to last a long time, most are rebuilt each season......the long break in period is mostly for longevity.......since the rings are seated pretty much within the first few miles (or after the engine has been warmed up and driven a short distance under load...they can just bring the engine up to operating temp drive it shortly and then go all out.....

nice...

i am hoping for 400whp out of a stock sleeved b16

ross pistons
crower rods
aem ems
msd 72lb injectors

i have the 440cc injectors in there right now and already made 306whp last year at 12 psi

i think 400whp should be good for a mid 11 with slicks
400whp is a good number for a street car

ok so i got about 300 miles on the new motor took it for a oil change

things lloked good and little dark oil and it was a tad low but thats normal for a brand new turbo motor to ...right??

i have hit very little boost like less than 2 psi accidently hit 4 once for a split second
whats everyones take on how my motor is doing

by the way no smoke coming out of the breather filter and car smokes a little at idle but its also running rich and its very cold outside

I think there are a few "monster" motors around. There is a guy on here making about 285hp on 10psi (b16a) runing 440's and v-afc hack. I'm having a hard enough time getting 226 hp on 9psi.... using sfc and fmu......
