Default Boosted d series

Hey guys ive done a bit of research and i cant seem to find a thread on simply boosting a d series for very cheap and what i have found is that you need a turbo kit or pieced together kits (plenty of stuff on that :p) injectors i believe give out around 175 whp. So i was thinking of 440cc dsm ones, a good tune (or you will die for your sins is what ive seen around haha) i was thinking of using pherable for a chipped ecu (i have a b16a pr3 chipped ecu for my currently blown pr3 from "winfab" tuning some ebay company which works great so a name brand seemed good to me.). From what ive seen a d-series with a good compression test and good track record is good for boost upto approx. 220 but thats an absolute crazy guy jacking the boost ur safe on 200whp ive seen a lot of people say. But please tell me if im wrong because im about to begin this project and am trying to figure out if im missing anything. Thanks for replies!

I would go to the Forced Induction board and ask around there, they will be more knowledgeable.

I have a boosted DOHC ZC "D series" that near 200 hp, stock internals and no major issues since 2000

My setup

DOHC ZC
DSM 450cc Fuel Injectors
Zdyne GOLD SECU (OBD0)
DSM Side mount intercooler
Blitz Blow off valve
Greddy Turbo kit for a 92-95 civic
Greddy Manual boost controller
Tuned by Evans Tuning

This is a VERY cheap turbo setup and will get you around 200hp range, and reliable. So with that, you are correct in your statement

Well, this is a topic I know something about as I researched the crap out of it and also boosted my civic on 2 different occassions with a D16z6 in it. The engine had over 230K miles on it and all stock internals. I pieced together a kit. I did this twice and the first time the only difference was a DSM T25 2g turbo which is easier for running the IC piping but not as powerful and requires a little more grinding for adapting unless you go gangster and weld the beast to your turbo mani. Here is what I used the second time which I though had more power:

-DSM 450cc injectors with modified lower seals
-DSM 14b turbo and I ported the wastegate to avoid creep
-DSM resistor box (but a honda one works too)
-DSM 1g BOV/ Bypass valve
-HF manifold with a baller machined adapter to the 14b
-Stealthmode Performance Oil feed and Drain kit made for Honda with 14b.
-Custom downpipe made in driveway
-CXRacing Intercooler and Pipe kit (universal kit 2.25", they make good pipes)
-The P28 that was in it then chipped on CromePro

On 8-9psi, an egay catback exhaust and on pump gas it put down 185hp and 159ft lbs of torque at the wheels. It spooled very very fast, was very fun to drive and I got about 34-35mpg erryday. This whole set up can be had for $1000 or under, done and running. Reliable, safe and fun. PM me if you have questions but there is soooo much out there an its not hard. I was intimidated the first time but you learn quick and understand its not complicated.

This sounds alot like my results also. The greddy kit might be a little more expensive but you dont have to find odds and ends

Very true! I considered the Greddy kit but I was able to save some money going this way and learn a ton. My nieghbor works for a very reputable tuning shop in Camas, WA and he suggested the pieced together kit and help with questions and some fab. I think the Greddy turbo is a 13g size or TD05-ish... The 14b had some more umpf... but if you want a more simple and straight forward kit, Greddy is a good one. They are kinda spendy these days I think around $1700 for the kit and thats no FMIC and that comes with eManage (booo).
I am not sure what the ZC specs are but 200hp safe is good and a whole lot of fun in a civic. Go find a nice twisty road and enjoy!!!

You dont have to but did trim out the OEM fan a tiny bit when using OEM Rad. Now I have a full size fludyne with slim fan. AC however I did have to remove

Just BARELY fits

Can anyone tell me if this turbo kit is any good and if i will run into any problems with it. yes i know it is a cheap kit but ive seen people run 20 psi on them before with minimal issues im just curious to know if this kit would be good for a d16? http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Civic-EF-EG-E...vxp=mtr&_uhb=1

If I bought that, i'd craiglist the turbo and buy something worth a crap. Might boost 20psi, but there longevity is minimal.

Manifold might crack, you should check out goautoworks.com, their street kit would be good for you but may be a little more than you want to spend.

that turbo manifold is guaranteed to crack, yes you can run 20 psi with it but the question is how long? i ran my first one stainless steel ram horn on 12 psi last me only 2 week before notice the first crack.

Have the crap turbo balanced and rebuilt with Garrett seals and bearings and then you at least will have the best of what that turbo can offer and go with a cast mani since they dont break.

By the time he swaps internals and has it balanced he could purchase a genuine Garrett unit

Most of the ebay kits are ****. Manifolds crack predictably, blow off valves leak or don't work at all. The intercoolers suck and the piping kits are almost always universal which means cutting and welding to make them fit and some kits dont even have enough of the proper bends in the first place. The couplers are **** and tear/burst and the clamps are known to strip. And having every piece of intercooler piping held together with multiple couplers increases the chances of popping a pipe off and provides numerous places for boost leaks

Some of the eBay/china wastegates are ok provided you open them up and make sure everything is tightened and the diaphragm isn't pinched or torn

You can piece a decent kit with quality parts by going with used parts

Plenty of reputable people sell quality stuff in the market place. I would start there in the forced induction classifieds and see what you can find

Also you haven't even mentioned fuel management.
