Default boost junky

For the last few weeks i have had a hard time getting my car to boost past 12psi..but i finally fixed that today. I was playing around and let me just tell you 17psi of boost is pretty crazy fast. It just burns through 1st and 2nd gear like no tomorrow.

anyhow...the problem is the car detinates really bad with anything more then 13 or 14psi. I am pretty sure its getting enough fuel..i think the problem is with my ignition timing.

I current run stock ignition timing..i dont have a MSD BTM or anything although i do have a MSD 6a ingition and a blaster 3 coil. And i was doing these runs on 91 octane pump gas (91 is as high as we can get here in colorado ).

I talked to some friends and they said the BTM would help alot. although i should beable to run stock timing with 108 or 112 octane race gas..which i havent tried yet.

What do you all think? Ideas? How much boost can i run with my little d16z6 on pump gas with the BTM?

I do have a cam gear...although its set a 0 degrees..i have never played with it any. Would retarding the cam gear help detination problems?

Here is a short version of my current setup..

d16z6
je 9:1 pistons
crower rods
block guard
stock head
greddy metal head gasket
erl mf2 w/ 2 550cc secondary injectors
msd 6a w/ blaster 3 coil
Walbro 255lr/hr intank fuel pump
fuel pressure @ ~60psi at full boost
t3/t40e garret turbo (custom kit)

thanks,
liam

you can run full igntion advance with racegas, but you need to retard it on the street, especially with that sorry Colorado gas... if you dont want to buy a btm you can just retard it at the distributer... you will have a little less power off boost, but it is more than made up by being able to run more boost on top... if you are running 17 psi I would retard the ignition to 10 deg or so /w 91 octane, even with the built motor...

retard the ignition manually at the distributor and you'll be fine.

running 10+psi with no ignition timing controller is pretty risky on the streets.
remember, just because it's built doesn't mean it won't blow again.

okay..dumb question time...to retard the distubutor...if i am looking stright into it from the left side of the car...it turn it counterclockwise (torwards the firewall) to retard and clockwise to advance right (towards the radiator)?

awesome...thanks for the replies. I will play with the distrubtor tonight.

When you say 10 degrees retard...thats like 10 degrees..as in 90 degrees is a right angle? So just turn the thing 10 degrees and see how it works?

Thanks again

If you nee a BTM email me. I am taking mine out since I got a standalone now. I am not looking to get a lot for it as I have no use for it.

Question. I'm running stuck internals, and exhuast. Drag Gen III would it be a good idea to advance my timing? I run 5 psi daily driver, and run 92 octane.

I ran 5psi and I cracked my sleeve. My timing was 15deg. I dunno how it happened but Im gonna run 8-10 degrees now even after I sleeve my engine.
I wouldnt run stock timing better to be safe than sorry.
