Boost !!! How long....
I was just wondering how long can you guys use full throttle/boost for ? I remember in a past superstreet issue, DRAG said no longer than 15 secs of full boost. Doesn't this seem a bit short ? And also, would you recommend an oil cooler ?
Any thoughts or comments ??? Thanks for any help given.

The only possible answer I can give you is, Drag *probably* based 15 sec @ WOT on EGT's. This is were the cylinder temperatures rise so high that it can cause detonation! Depending at what boost pressure, temperature, fuel mixture, etc.... the results will be different for everyone! There are so many different variables that Drag could have based their statements on!
on a drag strip your gonna only boost mid-13 sec or less.
Road course, your gonna be moving mighty fast if your already going 20mph and then boost for 13 second.....

Thanks for the info guys, not that I would be boosting that long, but I just wanted to know the limits of any turbo system...
Any comments on the oil cooler ??

for the oil cooler, you can get a valve that redirects the oil flow to the oil cooler only when the oil is a certain temp. i think B&M has them but not sure. a definite must if you're going to be running it in cold temps.
If you will road race or do longer than 15 seconds of WOT, you may want an oil cooler.
I thought I was going to be road racing and put together a kit for my JRSC GSR, but I trashed the 24 row cooler trying to install it. I bought a new cooler, but have not attempted the install again.
At this point, road racing is not in my future, so my kit is for sale.
24 row oil cooler (never removed from box)
Thermostatic control valve (has fittings and some hose installed, but never installed on car)
Remote oil filter mount (mounted on car breifly but never used. Takes stock size oil filters.)
Oil filter adaptor (replaces oil filter and has inlet and outlet, never installed)
All the 1/2"NPT fitting needed. (Some are fitted into hose, some into thermovalve, some still loose)
More than enough 1/2" ID hose to install everything (SAE rated hot oil hose. Rubber outside, SS reinforced internally)
I think I paid about $150 for all of this. If anyone is interested, send me a line.

Hmm....I was all happy until I read this. 15 seconds? Sure, it sounds good at the track, but how bout fooling around on the highway? What is your rpm at full boost on a Drag Gen III?
I know it's stupid....but on numerous occasions I'm moving at 125+mph for like a minute or so..... So I can't do this with turbo? Hmm.....

Moving at 125+ or accelerating FROM 125+ for a minute? Do understand that you are not actually boosting until the motor is under serious load. The car is not boosting when it is cruising.

Ok...say the limit is around 15 seconds of acceleration (boosting)....Then 30 seconds later you come from however fast you were going down to 20 mph and boost for another 15 seconds..and then again. How likely is detonation going to occur by repeatedly boosting for a relatively long time (only 15 seconds a piece)? Will EGT readings "save your ***" if they start to get too high and you are warned to let off a little (eg. if EGT shows fine, can you still have detonation risk)?
i try not to get over 800c... thats just a personal preferance..... realistically how fast do u want to go... on a public 30mph road u dont want to go that fast... so in 15 seconds u can get well over 100mph and on the highway from a 60mph roll... ull be way over 120 in 15 seconds...
if you're boosting with the pedal mashed to the floor in a GSR with x amount of boost you're gonna be doing at least 150mph, how much faster do you wanna go. Where do you plan on doing this?
cool sign imagine if you saw that on the highway!

Thanks, but I "borrowed" it from the Silver State Classic (Challenge) site. http://www.silverstateclassic.com/home.htm
BTW -- I'm thinking about running that thing one of these years, but I hear they have a tremendous waiting list and the first time you do it you have to run one of the "touring" classes. That's all I need, to get thrown out of an open road race for exceeding my tech speed!!
