Bent Carillos

There was the answer I was looking for. Thank you for the quote from the catalogue. So Carillo only makes 2 models for hondas, the pro-a (which seems like allmotor apps or stock replacements) and the h beam (which seems like overkill for most mild setups)? Just want to clarify here.
In Earls defense, he may have implied that the rods suck, but all he really flat out said was that their customer service was less than friendly when he inquired about it.
I agree though, this thread can easily be misconstrued. Which is what Dan said from the beginning and got crucified by a few people for

It would be good politics to admit that this was an application error. I've tried making things work myself..and learned my lesson. Either way, Earl, I always enjoy reading your threads..and thanks again for quick shipment on those CP pistons a while back.

I agree. Who would spend $650 for a 200whp motor when a stock rod can handle 250+ whp all day. That just doesn't even make sense. It is stupid actually.

your starting to sound like someone who said" I did not have sexual relations with that woman".
the intent of the light rod has always been clear, it has always been made clear by Carrillo and any professional engine builder.
you used the wrong rod for the application.....period..... no more side stepping the issue.
the lightweight rod, as you used , is intended for 125 hp/cyl forced induction (500 hp in the 4 banger) and 75 hp per cylinder allmotor, which is 300 hp....and their are plenty of reasons to use it, if you can't see the reasons, then you shouldn't be an engine builder. A Carrillo will beat an eagle, gram for gram, in short term and long term use, hands down......the chinese do not innovate, they copy.......Eagle is a chinese rod, the design copied from Carrillo, I believe.
Eagles are good too, but they also should be used for their intended purpose as well, Eagles are meant for 750 hp in a 8 cyl,.....thats 325 hp in 4 cyl....and that is crank HP.
the Carrillo SUPER lightweight rod (not available for 4 cyl) is restricted to 450HP and 7000 rom in a V8</TD></TR></TABLE>Eagles can hold alot more power then that dude, your not going to be telling Earl anything he doesn't know. That sucks because Carrillo rods are big money, hopefully they are willing to help you out on this one Earl, Honda-tech is a monsterous community and for this kind of information to be shown is kind of questioning the integrity of the rods?

I respect everyone's opinion and Earl especially. I may be biased towards Carrillo since we are a dealer for them and we use them in our builds.
But I will put those factors aside to look at this matter in a mature way.
The way I see it is that, each manufacturer/product is not Invincible to any damage. We all know that.
While Eagles have withstood HP levels in the 600 range. I'm sure there are many success stories with Carrillo as well with the Pro-As. The Pro-A (lightweight) is designed as a light duty Rod, meaning it is not suppose to be used in high HP setups.
The Pro-H rods are the heavy duty rods for setups with higher stress requirements. If you are comparing Manley, then Pro-A would be the Lightweight and the Pro-H would be the Turbo Tuff rods.
From experience, we have found out that you DO get what you pay for. Manley, Carrillo, Cunningham, Pauter do have the BEST machining and tolerances when we do the measurements for bearings. Eagles are the mid range(decent machining). Then you have the lower quality rods that you find out there with no name and look like Eagle H-beams. These totally have mismatched machining and weight on the rods and when you measure for bearings, the sizes are always inconsistent.
As far as rods to choose, as a consumer, choose what you feel is right for your budget and goals. Just keep in mind that better quality is not the best/cheapest price.
Earl has the right to share his experience. You can all take his word for it, but in no way do I think Carrillo is a totally bad company or bad product. Bent rods can happen with any company.
When choosing the rod to use in your block, your engine builder should let you know your options. Ask each part's hp levels, and if there are other options as far as price and quality.
We cant all assume just because of a brand name that it is going to work perfect for everyones application.
also FYI: the different rods avail from Carrillo are:
Pro-A lightweight duty with 5/16 bolts
Pro-SA aka Super As, which have 3/8 bolts
Pro-H are heavy duty rods with 3/8 bolts
Pro-H are used in many 1000+hp 2JZ setups. I believe its actually their most popular import rod that they sell.

One thing I find interesting.... Ok, so let's assume the 50hp/cylinder thing is right and these rods are intended for 200hp "all-motor" setups. That'd make them a flat out shitty rod.....think about it: 200hp in an all-motor setup? Plllllleeeease that's nothing, even for an all-motor setup!
