B18c: 50 trim eBay turbo - Pump Gas Dyno Tune
This car belongs to Gabe (boostedda). He came to us today for a tune.
Here is the setup:
B18c
9:1 CP Pistons
Eagle Rods
ARP Head Studs
Stock Head
Stock Cams
Skunk2 intake Manifold
Ramhorn Turbo Manifold
50 trim eBay Turbo
Walbro 255lph Pump
780cc Injectors
Adjustable FPR (base pressure @ 60 psi)
GM 3bar MAP Sensor
Tial 38mm wastegate
93 Octane
Tuned on Crome Gold
This chart is the wastegate pressure. It was holding at 5.4 psi. By the way, it was revved to 8k rpms for those wondering what the speed equivalent was. We'll try to find the chart with RPM's possibly this weekend when we get back from the Holidays. By the way, vtec was set higher than what you see on this chart. We had already tuned the low cam and had vtec set low to tune it as well as you can tell from this chart. Vtec is now set to 4750 rpms which is where it ended up liking it the most..
We tuned Gabe on 16 psi, but we were asked not to post the high boost chart, or the exact numbers...yet.
And for the video:
Gabe's CRX
And yes. Chris, accidentally put B16 on the video and misspelled "wastegate". Late night typo. Please direct any anger or resentment from the misspelling to Chris@tdcauto.com if you feel that you just have to.
Update:
Here is another video. Typos are fixed on this one. This shows the higher boost setting, but before the tuning was finished. The tires were spinning on this run due to bad tires and a reaaaaally bad wheel bearing.

Why are you bumping the fuel pressure up to 60 psi at idle? I was always under the impression this is not necessary unless you are making BIG power. Not saying that 280 isn't good...I would love for my rex to put down that kind of power. The most mine ever put down was around 250 with a smaller turbo and inferior manifold on a b16.

Good question. He's making over 400 whp. Just doesn't want us to say exactly how much over until he hurts some feelings first. We had to set the base fuel pressure higher to be able to support his whp goal with those injectors.

Street racer or something?
That chart looks like it would be a good/fun street car, was high boost on pumpgas or another fuel?

He's in the 400 whp range. Injector duty was maxed out at 19-20psi, even with a base fuel pressure of 60psi.

I can see using a fleabay turbo if you're on a serious budget, but this doesn't make sense. The IM alone could have free'd enough extra cash to get a real turbo.
FYI the people I've seen push ebay turbos tend to be very unhappy in the end. In one instance, they lost 40-50hp because the thrust bearing was taking a crap. Worst-case scenarios involve the compressor/turbine wheels snaping or shattering, others you just wear out the piston seals very fast.

Who's not to say he got the IM on a trade or dirt cheap?
No one here is advocating for ebay turbos. It's understood that you can't expect them to last very long. We've seen them last a 1.5 years and we've seem them last a month.

eBay turbos are hit or miss I guess. Gabe's is making great power for a eBay 50trim in my opinion.

B16CRXT, you're right. There are companies that sell all the top turbo brands on ebay. Usually what we mean when we say "ebay turbo", is something that was made in China or Taiwan and sold on ebay.
The majority of ebay turbo setups end up going with a brand name turbo down the road. Gabe, enjoy your car to the fullest in the mean time.
To Zach's comment, X2.

280 on 5psi is sweet considering most 9:1 stock head gsr setups with similar turbos make 300 on 10-12psi. in for more info.

I usually associate the "ebay turbo" with the cheap chinese knockoffs as well, but I was trying to give his the benefit of the doubt. lol
